Comfort
Stretchy and adjustable as it cinches closed in front for a customizable fit, most are pleased with the security they feel when out in uncertain terrain and conditions. While there is little concern about adjusting the vest portion while on the move, most felt it did the job well leaving them to focus only on what lay in their paths. With the pack comprised of innately adjustable Sensifit fabrics, the S-Labs Peak 20 promotes a secure, conforming feel with no bounce. Its insert of breathable padding cushioning the weight of the pack on your back and pockets and pouches placed strategically to balance the load, it won’t feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders…or back. With multiple adjustment points, it can either be great for personalizing the fit or create a hindrance each time it needs to be removed and re-equipped. Overall, it is lightweight and breathable creating as pleasant a ride as possible without chafing.
Size
The Salomon S-Lab Peak 20 is offered in a range of ” vest ” sizes from S to XL, and this seems to have proved to be ample for both men and women. With some complaints, it ran too large, and Salomon recommends sizing down when between sizing, so most were pleased with their sizing. And while the pack, unencumbered, seems comparable to others on the market, it is quite versatile. While it appears smaller, it is deceptively large as it expands tremendously for all that you would need for days of mountaineering. With a large 20ml main compartment, this jacket-like vest can meet many needs. Reviewers have claimed to carry camping stoves, bear deterrents, tarps, and blankets. While some choose to travel with water bottles, it is said to be able to accommodate a bladder as well. There are pouches, albeit smaller than some water bottles tend to be, in the front of the vest for quick draw hydration. Looks are deceiving on this pack which surprised some customers who thought it might be too superfluous while others were thrilled with its ability to expand. Though, overall feedback was very positive, specifically about how much it could hold securely and without being overwhelming.
Accessories
The Salomon S-Labs Peak 20 comes standard with a safety whistle and an emergency blanket. However, the rest of your trappings, you’ll need to account for yourself. Like many backpacks, the S-Labs Peak 20 features dual elastic front pockets for water bottles or whatever gear you need to squeeze in them for easy, quick access. Salomon’s are designed to equip their 500ml Salomon Soft Flasks, which are not included. These pouches seem to be smaller and unable to accommodate standard water bottles, but there are a few other brand options that can work in place of them. Some reviewers claim it can easily carry a water reservoir, or bladder, and Salomon indicates there is a hanging strap to fix and maintain the bladder but some point out that there is not port for the straw to feed through.
Use
The Salomon S-Lab Peak 20 is more than just a backpack for your Sunday trail hike…it is like your trusted companion on a week-long mountain adventure. With a 20ml main compartment and multiple sections and pockets designed to meet all your needs, it can carry water, fuel, sleeping accommodations, a mini stove, trekking poles, all this…along with your phone, cash, and ID. To keep the pouch from becoming cumbersome, an adjustable lock cord can be tightened to secure the load you carry. And while it sounds like it could become heavy, reviewers claim it is as lightweight as they come. Made with quick-drying, wicking, and waterproof fabrics as well as padding and securing mechanisms galore, it is not only breathable but smart and comfortable too.
Style
The Salomon S-Lab Peak 20 is considered stylish as backpacks go. The top of the backpack portion is wider tapering down to a smaller bottom. With its multiple nooks and crannies, it does not look weighed down or overly complicated. Still appearing, mostly streamlined, it is available in the following color combinations: Black/Bright Red, Surf the Web/Lime Punch, Transcend Blue/Black, and Union Blue.
Durability
The backpack portion of the Salomon S-Lab Peak 20 is made with tough nylon fabric and coated in silicone creates a barrier from rain lending itself to a longer lifespan. Most customers reported it was strong enough, despite its light weight, to accommodate the wear they encounter in their rugged adventures. There were a few concerns that the cords might be stronger than the material the pack consists of and that tightening too often would tear the fabric but most have been pleased with their extended use.
Breathability
With the bulk of the vest comprised of waterproof nylon with a silicone coating to create a barrier from the rain, the wrap-around section of the vest – on the sides and back – are constructed of a wicking mesh. Most felt this was decent for ventilation and certainly better than standard material at allowing for air movement and reducing chances of chafing and irritation.
Price
Some feel it can be in the higher range of standard, most understand it is for a good reason. What a few claim as extravagant, most seemed to find comprehensive and useful. It is chock full of compartments, pouches, zippered pockets, and adjustable cords for securing items, yet it is also lightweight, comfortable, waterproof, and durable. Not to mention that it can be used for casual hiking, fastpacking, overnight camping, to racing in some of the toughest conditions and terrain for days unassisted. Covering all that ground seems to make the asking price a lot easier to swallow for many.
Bottom Line
There are some that feel the pack is too fussy and not simplified enough but, by and large, most feel it is one of their favorite goto backpacks on the market. Able to bridge the gap from a day out on the Appalachian trail to running Marathon des Sables, most find it fully functional and easy to use. Lightweight and comfortable, it acts like your trusty companion as you trek into the unknown. If you have the inclination to set out for a full day in the wilderness or set records on a multi day unassisted race, many would strongly suggest you don’t pass up a chance to check out the S-Labs Peak 20. To put it like some reviewers, it’s “aces.”
