Upper
The upper of this running shoe features a sturdy construction, great for keeping your foot locked in keeping trail debris out. The durability of the mesh upper has been enhanced for this edition of the shoe the lacing system has also been improved to lock the foot down and provide even tension throughout the foot. The waterproof Gore-tex built into the upper to make sure your foot stays dry in wet conditions. Even though this is a Gore-tex shoe, the breathability is excellent when compared to other shoes with this feature. This is great for wet trails but it can also handle the heat.
Midsole
The shoe’s mid-sole material is excellent at keeping the foot well-supported throughout every stride, regardless of what terrain is underfoot. The midsole is cushioned with traditional EVA material but also utilizes Adiprene technology to enhance the overall durability of the cushion. Even after several miles, this midsole will keep the foot well supported. At a 22mm stack height and 10mm drop, there is plenty of midsole material to provide a springy feeling and help cushion the foot from impact. A removable cushioned insole adds more cushioning and even supports the arch.
Outsole
The outsole is built for traction and durability. It uses Continental rubber and cleat like lugs to provide excellent traction. The rubber outsole is incredibly durable and shows very little wear after several miles. This portion of the Riot 6 really was intended to deliver adequate protection regardless of the terrain you are on. They perform well and are capable of handling wet ground without suffering the loss of traction. The cleat-like outsole offers aggressive traction with lugs of many different shapes and sizes. This is certainly a shoe that is built for rough trails. The rubber outsole is durable and doesn’t show much wear after several miles. Because the cleat-like outsole is so aggressive, this shoe is not ideal for a road to trail.
Breathability
This shoe is very breathable. The lightweight upper surrounds the foot with mesh material while also allowing air to pass through the shoe. Considering this is a Gore-Tex shoe, it is a very breathable shoe and many runners report being very impressed. The upper allows decent airflow to fully permeate the shoe allowing the foot to remain cool, dry and comfortable. The water-resistant feature makes this a very versatile shoe.
Comfort
With 22mm stacked with EVA material and Adiprene technology underfoot combined with the comfortable, form-fitting upper, this is a plush shoe. The insole keeps the foot comfortable and well padded. The inside sleeve, as well as the tongue and the shoe’s collar, are also well padded. This extra cushion is helpful for attacking those trails which are not exactly flat or might even have unsure footing. The heavily padded inner lining keeps the feet as secure from injury as possible. The heel cup is designed to lock the foot in place, in order to avoid any heel slipping and keep the cushion close to your foot for optimal comfort.
Style
The upper is sleekly designed in neutral colors. The black Gore-tex attaches seamlessly to the outsole and provides a sophisticated look. The shoe comes in black with the traditional Adidas logo on the sides, as well as some fun accents around the laces and on the inside. The neutral colors are easy to clean and look great as part of any trail outfit.
Durability
This shoe combines an array of high-quality technologies that make for an incredibly durable shoe. The midsole is made with an Adiprene material, which ensures long-lasting comfort and impact protection. The Adiwear outsole is effective at taking on any terrain and is built to resist any wear and tear. The durable Gore-tex upper stands up to rocks, sticks and other trail debris. After several hundred miles, this shoe shoes very few signs of wear and the durability is very impressive. If you’re looking for something that will last, this is it.
Protection
The high-quality mesh upper protects the foot well from trail debris and shows little signs of wear after several times of use. The waterproofing membrane works as intended to keep moisture out of the shoe. The outsole and midsole material does well at protecting from anything underfoot. It provides full protection when it comes to tackling uneven terrain. The shoe is high quality and these protective features last time after time.
Responsiveness
The stiff midsole material offers great feedback while running. It is snappy and stiffer while still being comfortable making it perfect for any terrain. After plenty of use, it continues to be responsive while feeling slightly more cushiony than one would expect. While some might find this shoe a little harder, it makes for a nice responsive ride.
Support
The synthetic overlays that cover the outside of the shoe attach directly to the lacing system and work to lock the foot in place and give even support throughout. The removable insert also provides arch and heel support. The structured heel counter works to limit heel movement when running on uneven trail surfaces.
Terrain
This shoe has a variety of technologies that work to give it traction on a variety of surfaces. The continental rubber compound and the TRAXION cleat style outsole work together to tackle any terrain, dry or wet. These cleats really perform well when tackling uphills or downhills, when compared to other shoes.
Price
At $110 USD, this is a moderately priced shoe. If it can be found on sale, it’s a great deal. Some runners found it to be a little on the expensive side, but it’s a shoe that lasts and will take on any rugged chore you throw at it.
Drop
A 10mm drop means this is bordering on a stability shoe but is still neutral for almost anyone to run in. This drop is also ideal for impact protection if you are a runner who tends to land on their heels, adding just a little extra cushioning in the heel area.
Stability
The Adidas Supernova Riot 6 GTX has some great stability features. The 10mm drop provides stability from heel to toe for any foot strike. The aggressive outsole sticks to any surface giving stability on even the most treacherous surfaces. The upper works to lock down the foot further adding to a stable feeling throughout the foot.
Flexibility
This shoe is not very flexible, which is typical of a shoe with a 22mm stack height. The different elements of the outsole also contribute to the show’s overall lack of flexibility. I personally felt that the rigidness of the shoe added to its stability and consistency on a variety of trail surfaces. Other runners, however, lamented that they would like more flexibility from this shoe.
Traction
This shoe provides great traction on any terrain. The aggressive cleated outsole provides traction on wet or dry surfaces and even in deep mud. Runners can’t say enough about how impressive the shoe’s traction is.
Bottom Line
The Adidas Supernova Riot 6 GTX is a force not to be reckoned with. It can take on the toughest trails and is durable enough to do it day after day. It’s not the lightest or most nimble shoe on the market, but it’s tough. With its heavier weight, it’s ideal for those long training miles. This trail shoe exceeds the expectations when stability, support, and durability are concerned. Its neutral colors and sleek design are consistent with the Adidas brand and look good on and off the trails. The Gore-tex does a very good job at keeping moisture out while being remarkably breathable. Lastly, this is a comfortable shoe with lots of impact protection features.
