Upper

For those who enjoy both extra toe room and a drier wear, the Provision’s upper makes this shoe even more enjoyable. Made from Quick Dry Air Mesh, this particular upper allows for an extremely comfortable and breathable wear that allows the foot to be sweat free and even kept dry during jogs through the rain. In addition, this model is constructed with a FootShape toe box, which not only satisfies those who enjoy their toe room but also makes for more stability and a greater bounce with each step. Those who live with ingrown toenails are especially grateful for the added room and lack of pressure on their big toes.

Midsole

Since the 1970s, lightweight and shock-absorbing EVA Foam has been the go-to material for major shoe designers when it comes to creating midsoles. So it’s no surprise that Altra selected it as well when creating their Provision model. Their ultra light EVA foam midsole combined with A-Bound Cushioning provides incredible energy transfer for runs and walks. In addition, the FootPod technology incorporates guide rails along the midsole’s top layer, keeping the foot squarely in the center to reduce pronation.

Outsole

The Provision’s rubber FootPod outsole, complete with StabiliPod technology, provides excellent support and stability for those with minor foot conditions while still allowing for natural motion while running. Marked by three colored squares on the sole, StabiliPod essentially forms a mini tripod below the foot to support fallen arches and correct pronation. Additionally, its deep textured grooves provide an incredibly sturdy grip on most everyday terrains such as cement, concrete, and grass. Buyers should be warned, however, as reviewers have stated that the sole has been known to wear down considerably within just two months. As a precaution, certain rough terrains should be avoided.

Breathability

For a heavier athletic shoe, the Provision has proved to be surprisingly breathable all thanks to one major feature. Its Quick Dry Air Mesh upper allows air to flow right through and sweat to be wicked away quickly, reducing both foot odor and the likelihood of rashes and infections. This feature also makes it an ideal shoe for summertime athletic activities, as it allows for additional comfort while performing in higher temperatures. In addition, the Quick Dry feature also allows for rainwater to be repelled easily while still permitting comfortable airflow, giving the runner more ease while moving through rain storms.

Comfort

Though most reviewers focus more on its support and stability features, they do praise the Provision for reducing the amount of pain and discomfort they typically feel while moving. They also note that its FootShape toe box is especially gratifying for those who enjoy extra toe room and even those with ingrown nails. In addition, most reviewers state that this model runs true to size. However, buyers should be warned that the Provisions have an exceptionally long break-in time. While there’s no known time given according to weeks or months, one review stated that the wearer will have to run between twenty and thirty miles before the Provisions feel completely broken in. Considering the price of these models, it may not be worth it to some consumers.

Style

Though it’s considered more functional than casual, aiding with foot conditions and providing support for road running, the Altra Provision doesn’t skimp out on style at all. The Altra logo is featured prominently on either side of the shoe over four diagonal bars. Though all Provision models come with a white platform, the upper and laces are featured in a multitude of color options including black, blue, red, and orange. Women can also find pink and purple options should they desire it. Buyers consider this shoe to be stylish enough to flaunt during a workout session or while out running errands, yet still simple enough to be worn into a nursing or waitressing job and blend in with their required work uniform.

Durability

While most features on the Altra Provision have proven quite sturdy and are able to withstand great amounts of heavy athletic activity, a common complaint among reviewers is the rubber outsole’s lack of durability. Within a month or two, some consumers have noticed more significant wear and tear on the sole than they could with other running shoes. In some cases, it will begin to come off altogether. Considering this, the consumer’s best bet is to put these aside when embarking on excessively rough terrains or, if heavy trailing is a common activity, pass on the Provision completely and search for another option.

Protection

While not much online information is initially given when it comes to foot protection, the Provision’s A-Bound cushioning provides fair protection when it comes to foot impact while running. Its EVA Foam midsole equips the runner with the shock absorption and energy transfer that would be required to maintain a long-distance run. The Quick Dry Air Mesh also provides some protection from the elements during rainfall. In addition, those who are older have stated that continuous wear of these shoe has reduced over foot and leg pain and provided protection against further joint and muscle damage.

Responsiveness

Though very little detail is given online when it comes to the Altra Provision’s responsiveness, its midsole features enable it to be quite effective when it comes to shock absorption and energy transfer. Its EVA Foam midsole and A-Bound technology creates an incredible rebound and a spring with each stride and step. Additionally, the StabiliPod Technology adapts to the foot’s natural movement while still keeping it centered.

Support

Much of the same features that aid with pronation, including the StabiliPod Technology, also provide a great deal of support for fallen arches. Three stability enhancing zones on the outsole, marked by a different color from the rest of the sole, form a small tripod to keep arches lifted during runs. Reviewers that have purchased the Provisions for jobs that require ten to twelve hours of standing have reported being very satisfied with its level of support, as they’ve experienced little to no foot pain by the end of the day. And with firm cushioning at the heel and a softer support at the toe, heel walkers would definitely gravitate towards this model for ideal support and hours of comfortable walking.

Terrain

Though it is marketed as a trail shoe, multiple reviewers have stated that the Provision doesn’t look or feel like it’s meant for trail running. Instead, they recommend it primarily for long distance road running. Those who partake in light trailing, however, have noted that it transitions well when moving from concrete or cement to gravel. Because the outsole has been known to wear down easily, reviewers do not recommend extended usage for activities such as hiking or running on much rougher terrains.

Price

Overall, the Provision is considerably more pricey when compared to other running shoes of a similar style. This, of course, makes sense when taking its pain relieving benefits into account. On Altra’s website, all Provision models are sold at upwards of $120. When browsing other retail sites, such as Zappos or Nordstrom Rack, this model can be found at prices ranging from $70 to $100. And on websites such as Amazon, they are frequently on sale as well. Considering the many reviews that point out its lack of durability, it may not be worth the price to buyers in need of a shoe for heavy trail running.

Drop

Online reviews and descriptions average out the Provision’s platform at 25mm, with a heel-to-toe drop measurement of only 1.6 mm. Because this height difference is so small, almost non-existent, it counts as a Zero Drop platform. This type of drop promotes a much more natural stride than it would with a higher heel. This, of course, makes for a much easier and much more comfortable run. Of course, those who do prefer the higher heel would be better off continuing their search. For consumers who are curious about trying a more natural stride, however, a transition period will be required to reduce foot and back pain.

Stability

Since the Altra Provision is a stability shoe, there was no expense spared when it came to crafting its most notable features and building them into this shoe. Varus Stability Wedge Technology is positioned down the length of the shoe and slopes along the ball of the foot to reduce pronation. When combined with StabiliPod Technology in both the midsole and outsole and the FootPod feature which fits the midsole with guide rails, the runner can rest assured that their feet will be kept straight throughout the day without any strain.

Flexibility

Reviewers have described the Altra Provision as having a moderately flexible wear. While its main focus is providing the runner with support and stability to counter excessive pronation, its StabiliPod feature still allows for natural movement when running or walking. The shoe’s FootPod rubber outsole also works as a map for every joint and muscle in the foot, allowing for the best range of motion possible. This feature is further enhanced by the lightweight, knit textile upper.

Traction

Though the Provision’s outsole has shown itself to be non-durable on some terrains, it still provides excellent traction for long distance runs and activities such as cross training or light trailing. Its extremely textured rubber outsole, complete with deep grooves along the toes, heel, and ball of the foot allows for a tight grip on most roads and sidewalks during rain or shine. As with most running shoes, of course, it is not recommended for use during the wintertime.

Bottom Line

Those with collapsed arches, pronation, or ingrown toenails who are looking for a supportive yet comfortable everyday shoe, or who are simply in need of something more stable for long-distance running, will be more than satisfied with the Altra Provisions. With a virtual laundry-list of impressive features to ensure the most stable strides possible, it has become a favorite of those with minor foot conditions and those who work long shifts. Although it takes considerably longer to break in than an average running shoe, and occasionally a model with a weak outsole will be put up for sale, the overall design and effectiveness of this model make for a necessary staple that’s well worth its high price.
