Upper
This model upper is an upgrade from the GT-1000 3, featuring lighter and softer materials that make for a more flexible and lightweight upper. The GT-1000 4 is also the first of its line to introduce a mesh upper. The mesh upper allows for more breathability and ventilation, which is always a plus for running shoes. The new upper also now offers supportive overlays which help the support of the overall shoe. Though not cutting edge in comparison to other popular trainers, is certainly a much-improved piece from the GT-1000 3 and is a solid component of the shoe.
Midsole
The midsole has the vitally important job of providing comfort and stability during impact. This is often seen as one of the key aspects of a shoe. The GT-1000 4 has improved on its midsole from older models by implementing its SPEVA material. This material provides greater energy return per strike and also mitigates wearing out of the midsole. Another unique feature of the GT-1000 4’s midsole is its Duomax support system. This system is a dual density based design, that is incorporated into the midsole. It is designed to provide added support and stability. The midsole of this shoe offers great support, stability, and energy return, and is a fairly impressive piece filled with Asics’ unique technology.
Outsole
The outsole of a shoe refers to essentially the bottom, a very important piece that provides grip, traction, and cushioning with every stride. The Asics GT-1000 4 features a DuraSponge outsole, which is constructed of a unique AHAR rubber, which is Asics own concoction, that is designed to provide more cushion with every step. Another benefit of this design is enhanced durability, which Asics running shoes tend to fare pretty well in. The outsole of the GT-1000 4 is quite solid in what it provides.
Breathability
When shopping for running shoes, breathability is something that should definitely be looked at. A non-breathable shoe will cause excessive sweating and heat throughout the interior when running. This not only is uncomfortable, but can contribute to blisters and toe problems. Luckily, the newly instated mesh overlays allow for great ventilation and in turn breathability. The GT-1000 4 is a solidly ventilated shoe, and definitely an upgrade over the GT-1000 3.
Comfort
Lasting comfort obviously is a pretty important factor to think about when purchasing running shoes. You should consider the fact that you’ll be putting a lot of distance on them. For those runners who enjoy the cushioning style of more traditional running shoes, the GT-1000 4s are great. So long as one is seeking this traditional cushioned style, and does not mind the slightly heavier weight, the comfort of the GT-1000 4s is very good. Asics classic gel cushioning contributes to this, along with the aforementioned aspects of the shoe’s upper. The only negative to note is that it has been reported as loose by some, which could factor into those with smaller feet. However, this is a very comfortable shoe, particularly for those seeking a traditional running shoe.
Style
The style of these shoes is arguably one area where this model does not excel. That isn’t to say the shoes are unattractive, or not stylish, but the GT-1000 4s only offer 8 different colors and stylings. While this might sound like a lot, it pales in comparison to the myriad of styles often offered by other competing shoes. In terms of design though, the GT-1000 4s definitely have a very clean, classic, Asics styled look. Offering vibrant colors as well as dark, the GT-1000 4s is a well-styled shoe, though slightly lacking in options.
Durability
Durability is always something to really look at when shopping for a new pair. Nobody wants to waste money on something that will need to be replaced prematurely, purchasing new shoes. The Asics GT-1000 4 is a very durable pair of shoes. The new technology incorporated into the mesh upper, in tandem with the brand’s AHAR rubber outsole, create a very durable shoe. These shoes can certainly take heavy mileage and are a good choice for anyone seeking long-term trainers.
Protection
The Asics GT -1000 4s are great when it comes to protection. The design of the shoe is very solid and stable, thanks to the cushioning and design of the midsole and outsole. it is also well constructed and protecting of the top of the feet. The traditional running shoe styling of the GT-1000 4s also contributes to this. These shoes offer more protection than most of the more minimalist or lightweight shoes tend to offer nowadays.
Responsiveness
Better responsiveness promotes a better stride and more efficient running, The GT-1000 4s offer solid, though not amazing responsiveness. The newly designed midsole with Asics SPEVA material certainly does create more energy per strike, but when compared to minimalist shoes or lightweight shoes, the responsiveness is definitely not quite as good. The GT-1000 4s are a responsive shoe, but those seeking very high levels of responsiveness would better suit pursuing minimalist styled shoes.
Support
Asics tends to offer slightly heavier, well supported trainers, and the GT-1000 4 is no exception. The support in the GT-1000 4 is excellent. Oriented more towards neutral runners and over pronators, the midsole, outsole, and upper of this shoe offer great support through the unique materials used. Asics’ gel design and cushioning also contributes to this.
Terrain
Being a more traditionally styled running shoe, the GT-1000 4 is well suited for most terrains. Though not particularly suited to a single terrain, the GT-1000 4 can be used on the cement, asphalt, trails, grass and most other terrains with no issues. The shoes are also usable in rainy conditions so long as caution is exercised.
Price
Price is a spot where the GT-1000 4s shine. The GT-1000 4s are significantly cheaper than most of the popular running shoes on the market today. This is in part due to the somewhat older styling of the shoes, but that definitely does not take away from the quality of them. The GT-1000 4s is a great choice for the price.
Drop
The drop on the GT-1000 4s is 10mm. This is a fairly large drop in comparison to most popular running shoes on the market but is in line with the larger design and style of the GT-1000 series. The drop, though large, fits the shoe well and should not be a source of discomfort.
Stability
The overall stability is a necessary feature in preventing injuries. In this case, the GT-1000 4s, the traditional styling of the shoes actually matters. The GT-1000 4s offer very good stability, as is often desired with these types of running shoes. The material used in this models’ upper is well woven, and the outsole along with Asics’ gel design all contribute to a very stable running shoe, that can help protect from common little injuries.
Flexibility
Decent flexibility is necessary in preventing ankle sprains and twists, and allowing for good natural range of movement. The GT-1000 4s are fairly flexible, though not as flexible as some other more minimalist shoes may be. That said, the design of this upper has improved from previous iterations of the GT-1000s, and the GT-1000 4 is a decently flexible shoe, allowing a solid range of movement.
Traction
The traction you’ll have with these is fairly decent with the brand’s DuraSponge technology built into this model’s outsole. These offer solid traction on most surfaces but, don’t particularly excel in any surface like some road racers or trainers.
Bottom Line
These are a very solid choice for those looking for a more traditional style of running shoes. They offer a good deal of support and cushion for neutral runners and overpronators, and aren’t overbearing despite being on the heavier side. This one is not for those seeking more contemporary minimalist shoes with less support, but rather for those who desire good cushioning and strongly supported shoes. The only downsides to be noted are the somewhat lacking color options and the slightly older technology in the shoe. Other than those concerns, the GT-1000 4 is a very solid shoe, and when factoring in the price, is a solid pick for anyone seeking running shoes or everyday shoes with great support and cushioning.
