Upper
The Upper of the shoe features a few nice components to help with comfort for the runner, though it does lack a few other features that ended up being highly demanded by customers in the future. The first key feature of the Upper unit is the ComforDry sockliner, which plays dual purpose for the shoe. The first being that it cushions the foot (as if the rest of the shoe doesn’t do that enough).;The extra cushioning helps to add direct comfort to the bottom of the foot. The second role the ComforDry sockliner is that it helps reduce odor produced in the upper of the shoe. The next key feature seen in the Upper unit of the shoe is the Personal Heel Fit (PHF). The role that PHF plays in the upper is that it is a memory foam layer meant to form to the shape of your foot and add extra cushioning for the foot. As far as the mesh goes, it is a tighter fitting wrap, though some people had complained that it was too tight.
Midsole
The midsole of the Asics GT 2000 is where the shoe really shines in terms of features, as it does in the newer models of the shoe as well. In the midsole, runners will find a high level of high quality cushioning, designed to add plenty of support and comfort to the runner. The first feature we see in the midsole is the trusted Rearfoot and Forefoot Gel Cushioning Systems, strategically placed in the heel and forefront of the shoe to add extra cushioning to key parts of the foot.;This technology helps with the take-off and landing of each step and to remove the shock impact to further protect the runner’s foot. In addition to the Gel Cushioning Systems, the GT 2000 features a Solyte midsole with the Guidance Trusstic System. What this does for the entire midsole is offer lightweight, high quality cushioning so that the runner has a lot of extra support and comfort during their steps, without adding the extra weight of typical cushioning. Unfortunately, these are the only real main features of the midsole.
Outsole
The outsole of the Asics GT 2000 resembles many of the other models in the GT 2000 lineup. Featuring Asics High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR), the outsole has proven to be very durable and efficient. Another key trait of the AHAR outsole design is to deliver cushioning to key parts of the foot, specifically the front of the foot and in the heel. This cushioning is intended to soften the impact of landing after each step, and provide a little extra support. On top of AHAR, the outsole of the GT 2000 features both the Impact Guidance System and Guidance Line Flex Grooves to aid in the stability of the shoe during each step.
Breathability
Unlike many of the newer GT 2000 models, the breathability is another spot where this original model lacks. The tight-fitting mesh in the upper features small holes intended to help the shoe breathe well, though many runners feel the shoe could’ve done a better job at this. It’s not that the breathability is poor, it’s just that it could’ve been better. If you’re looking for a shoe that’s going to keep your foot mostly moisture-free, this may not be the shoe for you.
Comfort
The Asics GT 2000 scores very high for comfort, mainly because of all the cushioning. As seen throughout the outsole, the midsole, and the upper, each component has loads of cushioning designed to deliver a very comfortable run for the runner, which worked out very well. The Solyte midsole combined the PHF upper, and then the AHAR outsole makes for a very comfortable foot during the run. On top of the loads of cushioning, the ComforDry Sockliner helps with comfort by adding a layer of memory foam that forms to your foot, to help give a natural feel to your run.
Style
Despite being an older model shoe, the Asics GT 2000 has a decent style. While the shoe isn’t going to look as fresh as brand new shoes on the market, the style of the shoe doesn’t look as outdated as other shoes that came out in 2009. The only problem in terms of the style of the shoe is that there aren’t a lot of color options/color schemes to choose from, though this is expected, as older shoes typically didn’t offer a wide variety of color choices. Despite the old age and lack of color options, the GT 2000 remains to look relatively stylish, even in today’s market.
Durability
The durability of the GT 2000 resembles many of the newer models of the shoes: long-lasting. The outsole of the shoe was designed specifically to last a long time, using the AHAR Durasponge material. The rest of the shoe is going to last the runner quite a while too, as many runners are happy with the distance they get out of the shoe before they start to see any sort of deteriorating with the materials. If you are to buy this shoe, expect it to last you for quite a while.
Protection
As far as protection goes, the Asics GT 2000 scores higher in some parts of the shoe than others. The midsole and outsole of the shoe offer great protection to the bottom of the foot. Loads of different cushioning, whether it be the Solyte material, the AHAR, or the Gel Cushioning System, help to protect the bottom of the foot from injury due to shock or repeated pounding on the ground. As far as the upper goes though, there aren’t technologies or features designed to keep the foot protected from much. This isn’t a huge deal though, as many people aren’t expecting an extremely protective upper to their shoe.
Responsiveness
The responsiveness of the GT 2000 is pretty decent, despite all the cushioning. The main points of the Solyte and Gel Cushioning Systems are to provide lightweight cushioning that doesn’t take away from the overall responsiveness of the shoe. In newer models, the shoes do a better job in terms of responsiveness. However, the original model still does a pretty good job.
Support
Obviously, with all the cushioning, there has to be a great support in the shoe. Mainly what the GT 2000 was designed for was to provide ultimate comfort and support to the runner’s foot through max levels of quality cushioning. Features like AHAR, Gel Cushioning Systems, Solyte, and PHF offer great support to different parts of the foot. When all of these features come together, they support the bottom of the foot very well. As far as the upper goes, the foot is supported pretty well since the mesh is a tighter fit, even if a little bit uncomfortable. Overall in terms of support, the Asics GT 2000 does a great job at supporting the foot in key places during your run.
Terrain
The terrain intended to be run on in the GT 2000 is a hard, flat surface, specifically road or asphalt. Like the other models, the AHAR is going to help if you run on other surfaces like grass or dirt, as it is intended to help increase the durability of the shoe. For best results though, it is recommended to be run on the road.
Price
Another big downfall of the GT 2000 is the price. The price really hasn’t gone down much despite new models coming out. Slightly less expensive than the rest of the GT 2000’s, the price of the original is around $100, which isn’t terrible for a running shoe. Though for a running shoe as old as this one, the price should be a little bit lower. Despite the relatively high price tag, the buyer gets a lot out of the shoe in terms or features that make up the shoe, so it’s really up to the customer to determine if the high price is worth it for the quality of the shoe.
Drop
The drop seen in the Asics GT 2000 is very average, coming in at 10mm. The drop seen in this shoe will be great for runners who are used to an average drop in a shoe.
Stability
The stability of the Asics GT 2000 scores very high among users of the shoe, as it features the Guidance Trusstic System throughout the midsole of the shoe, and then the Dynamic DuoMax Support for added stability in the outsole, along with added durability. These features of the shoe make for a very stable shoe, which a lot of runners tend to love.
Flexibility
Like the traction of the shoe, there isn’t a lot to be said about how flexible the shoe is. In the new models (GT 2000 4 and 5) flexibility is something that seems to be very prominent in the shoe, though in this original model, there hasn’t seemed to be anything that stuck out about the shoe’s flexibility. This doesn’t mean the flexibility is poor or anything, it’s just not a trait of the shoe that stuck out to users.
Traction
As for the traction of the GT 2000, there’s nothing too special to say about it. Not to say that you will be slipping all over the place while you run, but there isn’t much to be said in terms of the traction. For the best traction results of the shoe, it is recommended you run on the suggested surface – road. By doing this, you increase the life of the shoe, how long the traction will last, and how effective the traction of the shoe is.
Bottom Line
The bottom Line is that the Asics GT 2000 is a great shoe despite being an older model. Naturally, the newer versions of the shoe have seen lots of improvement, whether it be weight, newly added features, design etc. Though that does not count this shoe out of the game, and for the cheaper price (compared to that of the newer versions) is something that should be considered when looking for new shoes to buy.
