Upper

The upper for the Brooks PureCadence 5 has a seamless design that will prevent any potential irritation. It is equipped with a lightweight, breathable mesh material that consistently brings in airflow. Brooks’ new 3D fit print contributes flexibility and delivers a comfortable fit. One thing wearers have noticed right away is that while the upper is mildly breathable, it doesn’t stretch easily. The PureCadence 5 strays from the sock look that other running sneakers have gone with, in the recent past. While it offers a snug fit and a lightweight experience, it is thick enough to have its own shape and protect the feet from anything that could cause damage.

Midsole

The midsole has some of this sneaker’s best features. For the PureCadence 5, Brooks uses their BioMoGo DNA. This unique technology enhances durability, comfort, and offers a superior ride. Thanks to the BioMoGo DNA, there is a reasonable amount of responsiveness. It also enhances toe-off of the sneaker and protects the underfoot from any impact that typically occurs on hard surfaces. The midsole also contains the Omega Flex grooves, which are used to enhance the flexibility. The effectiveness of the flex grooves is to be judged by the runner, as there have been some claims stating that the midsole feels stiff, which makes the running cycle slightly more difficult.

Outsole

The rubber outsole is one of the most durable parts of the shoe. The outsole doesn’t have a mass amount of rubber on it, meaning it won’t drag the runner down. The outsole also features the dual toe-flex, which prompts a solid toe-off. There are unique grooves on outsole which provide decent traction and flexibility. The grooves are separated into three separate sections: the forefoot area where there are longer grooves with a diamond-like pattern on the inside, the midfoot with long grooves going in at an angle, and the heel area where there circular style grooves.

Breathability

Despite some complaints of the upper construction, the PureCadence 5 has average breathability. Since the upper isn’t particularly stretchy, airflow isn’t as great as it could be. This doesn’t mean that airflow ceases to exist, it’s just that there isn’t enough circulating through the shoe in order to notice a difference. Some testers have reported that their feet were usually soaked after a run. A more breathable shoe would be able to decrease the level of moisture. With that being said, it is evident that the breathability of this shoe could be improved.

Comfort

These sneakers are fairly comfortable and are great for long runs. There are a thin tongue and padded collar that wraps around the ankle and offers a light, comfortable feel. While the upper initially feels comfortable, reviewers have stated that the upper has consistently caused blisters or irritations, especially in the midfoot section, even after a break in period. The tongue seemed to be the issue for much of the irritation. Besides that vexing tongue issue, most runners have been content with the underfoot cushioning.;If you have wide feet, you may want to order a size up. While the PureCadence line has been known for its large toe box, reviewers stated that the toe box was too narrow in the PureCadence 5. This change in fit is bound to disappoint loyal PureCadence wearers that expect a wider toe box.

Style

The aggressive neon colors used for the PureCadence 5 will catch plenty of eyes as you are running down the street. There are three primary color combinations available. They include a black/blue combo, neon green/blue, and neon green/asphalt. No matter what colors you are wearing, the Brooks logo is branded right at the outside forefoot in a large font, as well as the “3D fit print” in small text on the midfoot.

Durability

The PureCadence 5 has had great feedback when it comes to durability. The rubber on the outsole is strong enough where there is virtually no sign of wear after running a high amount of miles. Based off of feedback, one of the most noted features of this shoe was the durability, not only in the outsole but also throughout the upper. Since the upper isn’t made with a thin material, it is less likely to get punctured or damaged. Made with a basic rubber, it was somewhat surprising that testers can run for over 500 miles without any signs of severe wear.

Protection

Runners who are looking for efficient protection will turn to the PureCadence 5. The rounded heel is used to align the joint so that it encourages quality energy return, and subsequently, it reduces the stress applied to the joints. Since there is plenty of cushioning within this shoe, the underfoot will always be protected. The BioMoGo DNA in the midsole does a great job at protecting the underfoot by taking on any impact from the ground and using it for ongoing energy. The upper also has callous characteristics that protect the rest of the foot from any injury or discomfort. The 3D fit print is flexible, yet thick, so it would be fairly difficult for something sharp to puncture the material and reach the foot itself. One part that could be improved is the forefoot. Applying a toe guard to the front of the sneaker would definitely protect the toes from being stubbed by the curb or a tree stump.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness is one of the bigger highlights of the PureCadence 5. There is a superior amount of energy-return from the PureCadence 5. Reviewers stated that the shoe supports natural foot movement. The BioMoGo DNA in the midsole will help the runner absorb energy when hitting the ground and apply it to their next step, offering excellent energy return. The Dual toe-flex in the outsole also plays a part in the responsiveness of the PureCadence 5. It allows the runner’s big toe to work on its own and have an overall balanced toe-off. Subsequently, the runner will experience a more balanced run, regardless of the terrain. The durable rubber used in the outsole also contributes to the responsiveness of the Brooks PureCadence 5. Being the first point of contact with the ground, how the outsole hits the ground is important for the rest of the impact absorption process.

Support

The Brooks PureCadence 5 is considered a stability shoe. Brooks applied the support saddle to the upper, which secures the midfoot area and ultimately provides a stable ride. Based off of the low drop measurement, the PureCadence 5 could be considered a minimalist sneaker. These sneakers are also known to provide some fair arch support for those who need it, but won’t necessarily compensate the individual with flat feet. In addition to the upper, the midsole offers support for the foot. The midsole is equipped with lightweight guide rails that have the most support during a heel-to-toe transition. When it comes to the support, you can notice it easily, but it isn’t extraordinary.

Terrain

There is some solid grip on the PureCadence 5 that could help a runner go out into a rough terrain, but overall these sneakers are for the road. You will get the most of these sneakers if you run on flat, smooth surfaces, such as the sidewalk, track, or other types of pavement. Surprisingly, some runners have utilized the Brooks PureCadence 5 for both road and trail terrain, although the latter isn’t recommended. Those runners have yet to report negative experiences on the trail terrain. The rubber on the outsole isn’t built to deal with tougher terrain, so be aware of your sneaker’s longevity prior to making the decision to head off the road.

Price

The average price for the PureCadence 5 is slightly under $100, which is a deal for a high end running shoe. Based off of the great features, including the outstanding durability, this shoe is worth the price. One can disagree that the Brooks PureCadence 5 isn’t worth any more than $100, mostly due to the lack of breathability, uncomfortable tongue stitching, and narrow toe box.

Drop

The PureCadence 5 has a low drop of 4 millimeters. Based off of the heel-to-toe drop measurement, this shoe is a minimalist shoe. Having a low heel-to-toe drop discourages frequent heel striking, which decreases the likelihood of knee injuries. Having a low drop will also increase the flexibility of the Achilles over time.

Stability

The Brooks PureCadence 5 was thoroughly engineered for the overpronator. One new feature that directly enhances the stability of this sneaker is the external heel counter. The Heel counter stabilizes the foot and locks it into place so that the runner’s feet aren’t moving within the shoes during a run. The 3D Fit Print in the upper also snugly secures the foot within the shoe. This flexible material offers comfort while securing the runner’s feet for an efficient run.

Flexibility

A majority of the flexibility in this shoe derives from the Omega Flex Grooves in the midsole. These grooves enhance the midsole’s overall flexibility without sacrificing comfort or durability. Reviewers stated that they initially felt the shoe was stiff. One part of the PureCadence 5 that has lacked flexibility is the foam. While the lightweight midsole had great cushioning to protect the runner, it doesn’t exactly bend in the natural motion needed for the average runner. This stiffness could potentially deter the runner from this shoe because they won’t be able to run in their natural motion, something that becomes uncomfortable after an extended period of time.

Traction

The PureCadence’s traction is good but could be better. The grooves on the outsole are slightly raised but do not provide good traction on slippery surfaces such as ice or snow. The PureCadence 5 wasn’t built for trail conditions, so it comes to no surprise that there isn’t a significant amount of tread on the outsole. When used on the recommended terrain (road), the grooves in the outsole will provide enough traction to grip onto the surface and keep going efficiently.

Bottom Line

If you’re looking for something comfortable, with great stability and a lightweight feel, the Brooks PureCadence 5 is worth your time. These sneakers will work best for your daily run on the sidewalk or at your local track. Whether you are looking for a long distance runner or something to keep you comfortable at the gym, the PureCadence 5 has everything you need. The Brooks PureCadence 5 is a solid training shoe that will cater to the runner who is looking for a durable, reasonably light shoe that will last them a long time, and with its affordable price tag, it could definitely be of great value.
