Upper

Merrell has such a strong focus on comfort that they leave nothing untouched. The upper on the Overlook 6 is a fully leather construct with so many additions, you’ll be surprised. As a waterproof shoe, they achieve this function through a thermoplastic urethane (TPU) waterproof shell directly beneath the exterior layer. Beneath that is the M Select WARM lightweight insulation, followed by the Conductor fleece lining for added warmth. None of the cold weather, ice or snow is going to get anywhere near your foot with these layers. The toe cap is an extension of the Vibram rubber, protecting up and over the toe against snow and any debris or obstacles. The stitching draws on Merrell’s Italian roots and showcases a very durable, double stitch that won’t fray or shred over years of use. The cushioned Bellows tongue will also add to the warmth and keep unwanted debris out of the boot.

Midsole

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot use a firm EVA foam midsole for stability and comfort. It also features a Merrell air pod in the heel for shock absorption and added cushion for comfort. The midsole also has a molded nylon arch shank for stabilization of the foot, holding it in place for minimal slipping on rough terrain. With a single density, removable footbed, the base of the foot is secure and comfortable and ready for anything.

Outsole

The outsole of the Merrell Overlook 6 features a dual-rubber base, using both a harder Vibram rubber and the softer Vibram ArcticGrip rubber. The inner portion of the foot has ArcticGrip rubber interspersed throughout in the colorful specks for enhanced grip on wet and icy surfaces. Around the perimeter of the foot is the harder Vibram rubber that is stronger and more durable, increasing the life of the shoe and providing additional traction on the toe-offs and diverse terrain. With 4.5mm lugs, there is substantial grip built into the design, as well as the large spacing between lugs for flexibility and better traction. If you have more pronation or supination in your gait, you may need to adjust your steps to ensure the ArcticGrip makes contact with the area you are trying to cover.

Breathability

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot are designed to keep moisture and cold out of the shoe. Because of that specific design, this shoe is not overly breathable. The many layers of waterproofing, insulation and fleece lining in the upper block air from entering the shoe and cooling the foot in freezing temperatures.

Comfort

As one of the company’s 4 core values, each shoe is tested for comfort before it’s ever introduced to the public. And Merrell spared nothing on the Overlook 6. It has comfort and cushion in every inch. Because it was designed to keep feet warm and dry in the worst winter weather, it has a TPU waterproof shell to keep moisture outside of the boot. Below the waterproofing is a lightweight insulation layer, keeping body warmth inside the boot, protecting the foot. And the third layer is the conductor fleece lining that adds to the warmth and cushioned effect of the upper. The Bellows tongue keeps debris out but is also layered in cushion and waterproofing. The collar of the shoe is cushioned for comfort and to create a more snug fit, keeping snow and air away from the ankle. The molded nylon arch shank holds the foot in a natural position while the Merrell air cushion in the heel absorbs shock, protecting the foot and adding to the soft, comfortable fit.

Style

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot is a sleek hiking/walking boot. With a heavier outsole, the 4.5mm lugs make it obvious that this is a working boot. Available in a dark gray and black or a black and brown color combination, these boots keep their appearance traditional and functional. Protective rubber extends from the midsole up over the toe and protects both the inner and outer portions of the midfoot, blocking any debris or obstacles from damaging the shoe or causing injury. With only one lace hook at the top of the shoe, tightening may not be as much as you would like but the added cushion tends to overcompensate for lacing.

Durability

As a shoe that is expected to perform in the worst of winter weather, durability is an expectation as much as it is one of Merrell’s core values. The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot is no exception. With double stitching throughout the construct, there is very little likelihood of fraying or unraveling. The rubber of the midsole extends up and over the toe, creating a protective layer that adds to waterproofing and blocks obstacles and debris from damaging the toe of the boot. The Vibram rubber on the outsole is especially durable and long-lasting. Each 4.5mm lug is comprised of this same rubber which is incredibly sturdy and provides traction that helps to keep you on your feet, protecting your body as well as your boots.

Protection

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot protect from all of the elements. With added traction from the Vibram ArcticGrip rubber and the 4.5mm lugs of the harder Vibram rubber, you won’t be falling in the snow and ice this winter. The layers of protection from the TPU waterproof shell, the M Select WARM lightweight insulation and the conductor fleece lining protect from cold air and moisture. No rain or snow is getting near your toes with these levels of coverage. The Vibram rubber extends up over the toe, creating a cap to protect against debris and obstacles on your route. A molded nylon arch support, as well as the Merrill air pocket in the midsole, conform the base to the shape of your own foot, keeping it well seated and sturdy within the midsole, protecting against rubbing, friction, and unwanted blisters.

Responsiveness

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot has an EVA foam midsole over the full length of the shoe that absorbs part of the shock of impact but isn’t designed to refocus any energy. The Merrell air pocket in the heel of the shoe does all for a little rebound but mainly absorbs shock from the foot fall. As a hiking shoe, the design is based on stability and tread and less on speed and responsiveness.

Support

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot is a supportive hiking or walking shoe. The leather upper is a sturdy construction with layers of waterproofing, insulation and warming fleece. The combination of those layers with cushioning around the collar and tongue creates a snug fit that sits the foot securely down into the sole. Having a built-in nylon arch support allows the foot to sit comfortably and naturally while the Merrell air pocket in the heel lets the foot distribute weight naturally as well, deep into the sole of the shoe, with a solid boot all around.

Terrain

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof can be a winter hiking boot to keep your feet warm, wherever you go or it can be worn just running around town, doing business and shopping. The traction is great for winter activities and to protect from slips and falls.

Price

With the focus of the company on being the Mother Of All Boots and holding firm to the four core values, the Merrell Overlook 6 Ice, and Waterproof boot fulfill those and more. With the years of experience and the technology that has evolved over time, these shoes could be priced much higher. As it stands, they are a great deal for the quality and reputation that Merrell brings to the table while providing everything they promise.

Drop

As a hiking shoe, a higher drop tends to make a hike more comfortable as the foot doesn’t have to constantly flex with increased elevation. We weren’t able to locate a measurement on the drop of Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot. But, based on pictures only, the toe is situated above where the heel ends, appearing to be an average drop. Though not a natural ride, this shoe does have a thicker midsole than most and is designed for hiking so you should expect an average drop.

Stability

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot have a full leather upper that, alone, would not be overly stable, but the combination of the TPU waterproof layer, Fleece lining, and lightweight insulation holds the foot closely, and securely into the base of the shoe. Having the strong Vibram rubber outsole that connects over the EVA foam midsole and covers the toe, inner and outer extension of the shoe provides stability and keeps the foot solidly fixed into the base. The arch support allows the foot to sit naturally and the Merrell air cushion in the heel also seats the foot securely, keeping it stable through any terrain.

Flexibility

The upper on the Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot is a full leather upper with layers of TPU waterproofing, lightweight insulation, and a fleece lining. The combination of these layers creates a very warm, dry inner shoe and even allows for some flexibility. The Vibram rubber outsole and EVA Foam midsole are also incredibly flexible, giving this shoe a very short break-in period if any is even needed. The 4.5mm lugs on the outsole have large spaces between each, allowing for a natural flex with each footstep and very little resistance to the natural bend of the foot.

Traction

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot built for winter weather and slick terrain. With 4.5mm lugs, Vibram ArcticGrip rubber, in addition to traditional Vibram harder rubber, these shoes provide solid traction on snow, ice, wet roadways, gravel trails, and tracks.

Bottom Line

The Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof boot is a reliable, high-quality hiking boot that keeps the foot warm and dry. It has a sculpted insole and arch support as well as the Merrell air pocket in the heel for trail isolation and underfoot protection. This boot is great for any winter weather activity, is well worth the investment, and will last you for many miles to come.

Summary
Merrell started out with an innovative idea, to combine an American cowboy boot with Italian manufacturing and watch it grow from there. That thought process built some of the most comfortable outdoor boots available on the market and has kept them as one of the most respected brands for over twenty years. The Merrell focus is on shoes 4 core values: comfort, durability, design, and versatility. Those values are inherent in every design and every model of shoe they have produced since 1981. And because Merrell has received such an amazing response, they even kept the Wilderness boot, one of the earliest styles, in the line today. Yes, even with the signature blue laces. But their great, great grandchild, the Merrell Overlook 6 Ice and Waterproof are packed with today’s technology and comforts in comparison. These shoes speak for themselves.
