Upper

The New Balance 770 v5 features a breathable synthetic mesh upper with midfoot locking no-sew overlays. Mesh is used in the upper of most running shoes as it keeps the runner’s foot well-ventilated and it is a flexible material. The upper features the FantomFit technology. This is a feature that stayed the same from previous versions of the New Balance 770. New Balance used very thin materials through the upper with a seamless construction. A few wearers did not like the seamless construction of the shoe, saying it looked like stickers on the shoe. The goal of this design is to provide runners with a secure fit through the foot and additional support. The heel of the shoe features a structural overlay that is stitched together in a zigzag pattern. The upper includes a toe protector that is stitched over top the breathable mesh material. There is also a padded heel collar and a padded tongue. The New Balance 770 v5 comes with thin flat shoelaces, which some wearers changed out for traditional round shoelaces.

Midsole

The New Balance 770 v5 features the ACTEVA Lite midsole foam. This is an addition to the foam used in previous versions of the 770. New Balance added this foam to the midsole to help compensate for the 4 mm decrease in the heel drop. This midsole foam is lightweight and provides runners with an excellent amount of cushioning. The primary cushioning is provided by the REVlite midsole foam. This REVlite foam offers runners the soft and supportive ride they enjoy. The New Balance 770 v5 also features the ABZORB crash pad in the midsole. This feature is made of a rubber material and provides the runner with excellent shock absorption and bounce. There is a medial dual-density post to provide arch stability for those runners who are slight to moderate overpronators. This medial post keeps runners in-line and free of injuries. The New Balance 770 v5 features a removable foam insole for additional comfort.

Outsole

New Balance made some changes to the construction of the outsole to this 5th version of the 770. The outsole features bigger treads in the center of the shoe, which gives the shoe better grip and traction. It also includes larger and deeper flex grooves in the forefoot. This increases the flexibility of the shoe. The outsole of the New Balance 770 v5 is built with a combination of Ndurance rubber and blown rubber. The Ndurance rubber protects the outsole from wear and tear in high-abrasion areas. The blown rubber is used in the forefoot area of the shoe.

Breathability

The synthetic mesh upper allows the runner’s foot to breathe and stay cool. The insert is easily removed from the shoe, which allows it to be well aired out after a run. The thin material, used throughout the upper, works with the mesh to keep the runner’s foot cooler overall. The foot feels airy as it is not covered in a heavy, thick upper material.

Comfort

Reviewers found the New Balance 770 v5 to be very comfortable. The ACTEVA Lite and REVlite midsole foams make this shoe comfortable enough to be on your feet all day. The seamless construction of the synthetic breathable mesh upper minimizes foot irritation and keeps the runner’s foot cool. The padded tongue and heel collar provide cushioned comfort to the top and rear of the foot.

Style

The men’s version of the New Balance 770 v5 comes in two color patterns. It is available in a black upper with yellow interior and accents. It is also available in a silver upper with an orange outsole and black/orange interior. The women’s version of the New Balance 770 v5 comes in two color patterns. It is available in a grey upper with light blue outsole and interior. It is also available in white with a dark blue interior and pink accents. This running shoe is available in normal width. 80% of those who purchased the men’s version of this running shoe found it to fit as expected. 74% of those who purchased the women’s version of this running shoe found it to fit as expected. Some wearers did find the shoe to be more on the narrow side.

Durability

The Ndurance rubber used in the outsole of the New Balance 770 v5 provides runners with maximum durability. The ABZORB cushioning used in the midsole is constructed to maintain its cushioning properties longer than the traditional EVA foams used in running shoes. The ABZORB foam material resists compression set, which means the New Balance 770 v5 running shoes will go further before being replaced.

Protection

The ABZORB crash pad used in the midsole protects the leg and body from shock upon impact. This feature reduces heel, ankle and back pain as a result of shock being transferred through the shoe to these areas. The upper construction keeps the runner’s foot secure. The synthetic overlays lock the foot in place. The padded heel collar keeps the ankle in place so there is no chance of the foot slipping. The stitched synthetic toe piece protects the runner’s toes and minimizes holes that may appear in the mesh. The REVlite midsole offers the runner a good amount of protection for their feet.

Responsiveness

The foam technology used in the midsole of the New Balance 770 v5 gives runners great shock absorption. The ABZORB crash pad lets runners experience a bounce in their stride, as well as a smooth transition from heel to toe.

Support

The dual-density medial post through the midsole supports runners through their gait. This feature is firm and non-obtrusive. The synthetic overlays through the midfoot and heel add support to the runner’s foot but locking it in place.

Terrain

The New Balance 770 v5 is designed for road running. Reviewers found this shoe to perform well during workouts and gym training. While this shoe is not a trail running shoe, the large and deep lugs on the outsole allow it to work well on easy trails.

Price

The New Balance 770 v5 is an affordable running shoe. It ranges in price from $64 to $85 on Amazon. The materials used in the midsole and outsole of the New Balance 770 v5 are made to last longer, which means you need to replace these shoes less frequently. These running shoes are definitely an excellent investment, especially for those who are occasional or recreational runners. The low price point makes this shoe appealing to those who are looking to start running and don’t want to spend the money on a higher-end running shoe just yet.

Drop

The heel to toe drop is 8 mm, which is an ideal drop for runners. An 8-mm heel to toe drop makes this a comfortable running shoe for both heel and midfoot strikers. Previous versions of the New Balance 770 featured a 12-mm heel to toe drop.

Stability

The New Balance 770 v5 is classified as a stability running shoe, designed for those with a normal arch and who overpronate. This means the New Balance 770 v5 is recommended for runners whose foot tends to roll slightly inward during a run.

Flexibility

The larger and deeper flex grooves featured in the outsole increase forefoot flexibility. This flexibility is important because it gives the runner’s foot full range of motion, helps the foot accelerate forward during toe-off and maintains strong ankles and calves. The mesh material used through the upper of the New Balance 770 v5 is flexible, letting the shoe move with the foot.

Traction

The outsole of the 5th version of the New Balance 770 features larger lugs, which give the runner great traction in wet and dry conditions.

Bottom Line

The New Balance 770 v5 is a comfortable running shoe that is built to last through 100s of miles. This stability running shoe is ideal for the runner who experiences mild or moderate pronation. ACTEVA Lite and REVlite foam midsole cushioning works with the lower heel-to-toe drop to provide runners with a soft, supportive and smooth ride. New Balance constructed this running shoe to minimize injuries, keeping runners on the road longer and more often. Runners experience a secure fit thanks to the synthetic overlays through the midfoot and heel. The padded tongue and heel collar enhance the comfort and secure fit of the New Balance 770 v5. The breathable mesh upper keeps the runner’s foot at a comfortable temperature.
