Upper
The upper on the NikeLab Komyuter PRM is definitely where this sneaker shines. Its unique closure system is something not seen in any other shoe. When undone, the sneaker has a bag-like silhouette. It is made of a rip-stop textile material that is water-resistant and has a heel-closure lacing design. The rip-stop material also offers a four-way stretch so it adapts to any foot comfortably and is reinforced around the toe box. There are no visible laces like on typical sneakers. Rather, there is a unique lacing system that connects the front part of sneaker using a single lace that runs from the tongue, through the inside of the shoe and out the back which you then pull and fasten using a spring-toggle mechanism that magnetizes to a button clip on the back. The front part of this shoe also features a magnetic buckle closure that can be quickly and easily fastened and unfastened, keeping it snug on your foot. The tongue of the sneaker folds into the shoe when the toggle-closure is pulled tight and the buckle is closed, giving the sneaker a sleek silhouette. Additionally, the inside of the shoe boasts a supportive and cushioned heel to keep feet comfortable and helps prevent blisters from forming. At the bottom of the tongue, the stitches are protected with a bonded seal, to keep moisture out. The sides of the sneaker feature small Nike swoosh emblems tastefully as well, giving them a clean look.
Midsole
These shoes have a comfortable EVA midsole which makes them cushioned and comfortable. EVA is designed to respond to compression and returns to its original shape quickly and easily so these shoes are pretty comfortable. Since they are engineered to be casual sneakers, the midsole isn’t equipped with any of Nike’s ‘boost’ technology but they are still very comfortable thanks to the EVA midsole.
Outsole
This sneaker’s outsole is made of durable rubber and has a pattern that is reminiscent of the Nike Flyknit sneaker. It features lines of rubber stretching back and forth on the bottom of the shoe, giving it a minimalistic yet stylish look. This pattern continues up to the midsole and is visible on either side when you have the sneakers on your feet. Since these sneakers are designed for the concrete jungle, they don’t offer an incredible amount of grip, but they are definitely up to the task of casual everyday use.
Breathability
Although the Komyuter PRM is a water-resistant sneaker, they are surprisingly breathable. The lightweight rip-stop material is made to withstand the elements while going about everyday tasks but also helps to keep feet fresh. Because they don’t have leather or plastic-like textile in their upper design, these shoes offer a good amount of air in and won’t make your feet sweaty and uncomfortable.
Comfort
Designed for all-day comfort, the NikeLab Komyuter PRM is very comfortable. Just as the name suggests, the Komyuter is an ideal sneaker for commuters because they are comfortable and easy to put on and take off. The adaptable four-way stretch material in the upper help them to mold to any foot shape and won’t constrict feet at all. The heel cup offers cushioning as well, so walking in them won’t tear your feet up at all. Additionally, the soft bag-like tongue design won’t rub against the top of your feet like some shoes tend to do and the easy-to-use closure system offers an adaptable fit to conform to your feet. With an EVA insole, these shoes will feel light, cushioned, and comfortable.
Style
These sneakers are a part of Nike’s ACG line, meaning they are ‘all-condition gear’ shoes. Errolson Hugh, the designer of the ACRONYM clothing line, was brought on board to help develop this sneaker. His idea came simply from a brown paper bag, and he, along with Nike, wanted this shoe to be easy to put on and take off, all while being uniquely stylish. The uncomplicated magnetic buckle closure and pull-cord lacing system give this sneaker a distinct and minimalistic look. The simple colorways offered make this sneaker a sophisticated casual sneaker option and look great with almost any outfit. They are simple in the bells and whistles department, but at the same time, they are extremely stylish in their unique design.
Durability
With their water-resistant rip-top textile upper, these sneakers offer a durability, unlike many other casual sneakers. They are designed to be worn by people in the concrete jungle who may be walking in all sorts of weather conditions. The bottom of the tongue features a rubber-like bond to keep water out as well. The sneaker’s outsole is made to stand up to everyday wear and tear and is pretty durable as well.
Protection
The Komyuter PRM will keep your feet comfortable and safe from the elements with its water-resistant upper. The rubber outsole will protect your feet from anything that comes into your path while walking the streets of your city or town or on a light walk through the woods. They aren’t meant to be super-rugged sneakers since they don’t have any large lugs on the bottom, so they won’t necessarily protect your feet on uneven or sharp surfaces, like when you are hiking, but they will keep feet cozy and dry.
Responsiveness
The EVA midsole gives this sneaker the cushion you need for all-day comfort. EVA responds well when pressure is applied and goes back to its original shape. This helps the shoe respond to each step and provides comfort and support. Its rubber outsole has enough responsiveness to it to avoid aching legs because the rubber will react to the ground by lightly propelling you forward.
Support
The NikeLab Komyuter PRM doesn’t offer a tremendous amount of support due to the minimal amount of materials in its upper. However, this sneaker’s unique closure design helps keep your foot steady. The pull cord and magnetic button closure at the back of the sneaker keep the shoe snug on your foot and the magnetic buckle closure over the tongue helps the shoe stay in place. The four-way stretch fabric, along with the closure designs, allows the sneaker to form to your individual foot shape which keeps your feet stable and supported. The heel counter also has some light padding on the inside to keep your foot comfortable and supported.
Terrain
As this sneaker’s name suggests, this shoe is designed to be part of the commuter’s attire. Basically, they are meant to offer comfort, dependability, and ease-of-use to the busy, on-the-go worker. Its unique closure system allows for fast on and off and can even be worn when walking to and from work and then quickly changed at your destination. They aren’t designed to go trail walking, but if you are looking to commute to work on foot or if you just want to add some unique style to your casual look, then these are the shoes for you.
Price
With a dependable name like Nike, you would expect to pay a good amount for these sneakers. However, the Komyuter PRM comes with a pretty affordable price tag. They offer a unique design and are an excellent addition to your shoe collection, especially at their affordable price.
Drop
Since these are primarily meant to be a walking type of sneaker, they have a pretty neutral drop. The outsole is similar to that of the FlyKnit and it has a pretty similar feel to it.
Stability
This sneaker has a heel counter that will keep your foot steady and an EVA midsole that will keep it cushioned. They aren’t designed to be a stability sneaker but they will keep your foot safe and stable if you are using them for what they are designed for – walking around the concrete jungle.
Flexibility
With an EVA injected midsole and minimal rubber outsole, this sneaker is fairly flexible. It doesn’t feature any sort of flex grooves like many Nike sneakers do, but they are definitely not stiff shoes. Its rip-stop textile upper gives this sneaker the ability to adapt to quick commuter-walking feet as well.
Traction
The outsole of the Komyuter PRM features raised ridges that will help you stay steady on smooth surfaces. As mentioned earlier, they aren’t equipped with heavy lugs so they aren’t really meant to go hiking with, but light walks on wooded trails would be okay. These are best suited for asphalt, sidewalks, or just around town.
Bottom Line
There’s no doubt about it, this sneaker is definitely a head-turner with its unique design. When the shoe is not on your foot and the closures are open, it may look a little strange, but the functionality of its design is part of its appeal. You can simply step into this lightweight sneaker, pull the cord at the back, snap the lace to the magnet, and close the magnetic buckle over the tongue and off you go! The EVA injected midsole and four-way stretch water-resistant upper offer an exceptional amount of comfort and will allow you to feel comfortable all day. The Komyuter PRM isn’t meant to be a high-milage running sneaker or a trail-shoe, but it is certainly an awesome sneaker to add to your everyday wardrobe, especially for the affordable price.
