Upper
Many quality running shoes today come equipped with a breathable mesh upper. Runners know how damaging a moist foot can be to a race or even a non-timed training run. This shoe takes the breathable mesh upper common in many racing shoes and ups the technology to a new level of comfort and protection. The Salomon Sonic Aero uses a technology called 3D stretch air mesh for the upper of this shoe. This allows for extra breathability and gives the shoe a very flexible feel to it.;The construction is seamless so you won’t have to worry about added friction or the discomfort that poor stitching can cause.
Midsole
The midsole is designed with dual foam technology. It includes a combination of the OrthoLite foam and EVA foam. The Ortholite foam adds cushioning and support without adding extra weight to the shoe. This helps keep the shoe at under nine ounces. The EVA heel cup ensures added security and cuts down on unwanted movement and friction.;The Ortholite Sock Liner is also an excellent addition to the midsole. This technology improves the shoe’s ability to dry quickly and eliminate odor and wetness. Runners know that unwanted wetness on runs can lead to a whole slew of unwanted annoyances, but with this technology, your feet will stay dry and cool even during hot runs.
Outsole
One of the neatest features about this shoe is the outsole. Salomon has always been a brand that is synonymous with eco-friendly, and this shoe really shows that. The outsole is made of durable rubber that comes from, in part, recycled tires! In addition to this eco-friendly feature, the outsole uses ContaGrip traction along the base to increase the traction of the shoe. These combined features make this shoe very durable. It can be trusted to hold up for an extended amount of time and miles. Additionally, this shoe features 3D Grip technology along the outsole for great traction on the roads.
Breathability
This is a great shoe for keeping your feet, cool, dry, and odor free. The added technology of the 3D stretch air mesh upper allows maximum breathability. Combine that with the OrthoLite Sock Liner and the Salomon Sonic Aero’s are guaranteed to give you a dry, comfortable run even during the warmest outings.
Comfort
The Salomon Sonic Aero offers a surprising amount of cushioning and comfort for such a light shoe. Specifically, the forefoot and the toe box offer a nice roomy feel without sacrificing the snugness and security. Additionally, the dual foam of the midsole adds an extra cushioning that runners appreciated. Reviewers commented that in the comfort department, the shoe felt more like heavier shoes they have worn. They were impressed the Salomon was able to keep the comfort high and the weight very low.
Style
If you want people to notice you on at the starting or finish line, you have found yourself a stylish pair of shoes in the Salomon Sonic Aeros. Not only are they great looking racing shoes, but fans reviewed how stylish they looked with jeans too. Two of the unique color combinations include midnight blue, bright blue, combined with gecko green and gecko green, granny green combined with union blue. And that is just two of the great combinations!
Durability
The Salomon brand is a go-to for durability. The dual foam material of the midsole will not easily break down. Combine that with the recycled tire rubber of the outsole and you have a shoe that can go the distance. While the price might be slightly higher on these shoes, since they last longer than your average racing shoe, they are more than worth the price.
Protection
The Salomon Sonic Aero offers little extra support. This is a shoe that is designed for fast-paced road racing, so there isn’t a strong need for added protection against the elements. The shoe does, however, offer added protection against odor and wetness with the addition of the OrthoLite Sock Liner.
Responsiveness
This shoe receives high marks in many areas, but one of the stand-out features of this shoe is the responsiveness. The Sensifit technology in the midsole allows the shoe to be adaptable and gives each runner a unique experience based on their own unique stride. The 3D ride concept that is used in this shoe also eliminates potential hot spots.
Support
This is a good shoe for the runner who is looking for neutral arch support. It offers the average amount of support, so if you are a high arched runner, you might need to consider another shoe. In addition, these shoes are designed with EndoFit technology. This technology uses an internal sleeve that keeps the foot in place and provides the runner with extra support and cushioning.
Terrain
This shoe is made for the road or track. It is specifically designed as a road racing shoe. This is best for shorter runs at a faster pace. Salomon designs great shoes that can take you off road and onto the trails, but this is a shoe you are going to want to reserve for the pavement and track.
Price
Salomon’s are known as a high-end brand. They use the highest quality materials and are known for their durability. With that being said, you do pay for what you get in these shoes. Although the shoes can be over 100 dollars, reviewers agreed they were worth the price. This is a shoe for the more advanced runner who is looking for a shoe that will bring them through speed work. If you are a runner who is just starting out, and the price is a major concern of yours, there are many great options that you can find for under seventy-five dollars.
Drop
These shoes come equipped with an 8-millimeter drop. Runners reported that this is an extremely responsive shoe. They reported feeling very close to the ground, and the dual foam of the midsole combined with the durable rubber (made of recycled tires!) in the outsole made for a very responsive running experience.
Stability
If you are a runner who is looking for a lot of added stability, the Salomon Sonic Aero may not be the shoe for you. This shoe offers the least added stability of shoes in its same category. This doesn’t make the shoe a bad shoe, per se, it is all about your individual needs and preferences as a runner. Some runners require the added stability that a high arched shoe can provide, while others are happy with the neutral support. It is all based on what you are looking for in your perfect running shoe.
Flexibility
The combination of the 3D stretch air mesh fo the upper and the durable, lightweight EVA foam of the outsole make this an extremely flexible shoe. Runners reported that this shoe fits like a glove and moves easily with your every stride. Some runners did report that the shoe needed a slight amount of “breaking in”, but once that period was over, the shoe felt like it was “made for” their feet.
Traction
The rubber outsole provides great traction even on slippery roads, however, this is a shoe that was designed with the roads in mind so don’t expect the added grip of a trail running shoe. While it does give maximum grip for a road running shoe because of the 3D gri[ technology of the outsole, it won’t provide great protection on trails or uneven terrain.
Bottom Line
The Salomon Sonic Aero is a speedy shoe for the training veteran. These shoes were designed with top quality technology (OrthoLite Sock liner, SensiFit Compressed EVA Foam, and EndoFit) in order to give you a fast, light, quality ride. This shoe scored high marks among reviewers for responsiveness and breathability. They loved the 3D Stretch air mesh of the upper and were very impressed that the outsole was constructed using recycled tires for an eco-friendly ride. Runners looking for a shoe to do their speed work and tempo runs loved this shoe. It is not designed for the runner looking to do the long, slow, high mileage runs, but if you are looking for a speed buddy, this is a great shoe for you.
