Upper
One of the biggest compliments that this shoe received was for the upper. The upper of the Speedcross Vario uses Salomon’s signature Sensifit technology. This technology molds to the shape of the foot and cradle the foot for added comfort and support. In addition to this, the anti-debris mesh material used in the upper can simultaneously protect the foot from debris and allow air to flow freely to the foot to keep it cool, dry, and free from irritation. Runners were very pleased because they didn’t have to worry about blisters while wearing these shoes. Salomon also lined the tongue of the shoe with this anti-debris mesh material to ensure that all parts of the upper protect the runner from discomfort and potential injury.
Midsole
New Balance opted for a traditional EVA midsole foam for this shoe. The traditional EVA midsole foam provides the runner with protective cushioning. The EVA midsole foam is lighter than alternative foams, but it still does a great job of absorbing shoe and keeps the runner safe on their runs regardless fo the terrain. This shoe also features Salomon’s patented LT muscle midsole technology that is designed to provide superior energy return to the runner.
Outsole
The outsole of this shoe features Salomon’s patented Contagrip outsole rubber. This material and design provide the runner with the highest quality traction due to the multi-directional lugs that line the underfoot of the shoe. Runners commented that this additional traction makes this a great shoe for training on hills. Additionally, runners commented that the Contagrip outsole does a great job of standing up against the harsh conditions of the trail without losing its shape. This adds long lasting durability so runners need to replace this shoe less often.
Breathability
The upper of the shoe is able to provide protective breathability to the runner. This means that the anti-debris mesh has large enough ventilation holes to promote airflow. It also keeps debris from entering the shoe as well. Runners commented that then during their warm weather hikes or runs, their feet never overheated or felt restricted because the upper was so breathable. Likewise, runners reported that this shoe kept them free from blisters too.
Comfort
Runners loved the comfort provided by these shoes. The midsole features a responsive EVA cushioning. This absorbs shock from each foot fall to provide a more comfortable ride overall. Additionally, the EndoFit upper provides a revolutionary fit and feel. This material molds to the unique shape of each runner’s foot and provide a fit that can be both snug and supportive but also extremely breathable and flexible. Runners appreciated that the upper doesn’t contain any additional structures that impede the natural movement of the foot. This provides a bootie-like fit for the shoe that runners found to be comfortable enough to wear without socks at all.
Style
This shoe features a rugged style that runners who are looking for an aggressive looking competition shoe loved. The color selections are stark with pops of bright color. This shoe is not a fashion shoe and is instead intended to provide the runner with a serious look. This shoe is only offered in two color combinations, and runners reported that they were hoping for more options.
Durability
The outsole of this shoe is designed using Salomon’s signature Contagrip traction. This is made from a highly durable rubber and specifically designed to take a pounding without losing its shape. Runners were very impressed with the overall durability of this shoe and reported that even on long runs or runs through difficult terrain, the shoe maintained its new look and feel.
Protection
One of the key protective elements of this shoe can be found in the EVA midsole. This midsole material is designed to absorb shock from each footfall. This translates to fewer injuries and far less impact on the major joints. Runners who are prone to injury, especially hip and knee pain, found this shoe to reduce pain. Runners who are prone to injury reported that running in these shoes helped eliminate joint pain, and overall left them with far fewer injuries than other running shoes in the same class. Since this shoe is also designed for trail running, the Salomon design team included details that will ensure a safe run over any terrain. The outsole features a mudguard that wraps around the base of the shoe. This works to repel mud that can cause slipping and injuries.
Support
There are a few different ways that this shoe works to support runners through their trail or road runs and races. The first is the EndoFit technology used in the upper. This material does an amazing job of gripping the foot and providing a snug fit that supports the runner and keeps them safe from unwanted side to side movement. The LT muscle midsole technology cradles the foot and provides added arch support for the runner.
Terrain
The unique thing about this shoe is that it is versatile enough to be used for rugged off-road adventures as well as less aggressive road running too. Runners found the multidirectional lug pattern that lines the underfoot to be good for soft or harder surfaces. Regardless of whether it is trail or road running, runners found this shoe to be the perfect companion for up and down hill running.
Price
Runners were pleasantly surprised at the affordability of this shoe. Not only does the Salomon Speedcross Vario come in under budget compared to the average price of a trail or road running shoe on the today’s market, but it’s also a great value since it can be used for both road and trail. There is no need to purchase two separate shoes for trail racing and road racing because this shoe can handle both successfully.
Drop
This shoe features a heel height 29-millimeters and forefoot height of 19-millimeters, giving this shoe a 10-millimeter drop. Runners who are used to running in a traditional drop shoe will have no problem with this shoe. However, runners who are hoping to be closer to the ground and have a more minimalist feel should look elsewhere for a running companion.
Stability
This is not a shoe that is suggested for the runner who needs additional stability support. This shoe is designed for the neutral runner which means that they don’t suffer from issues of over or under pronation. The Salmon Speedcross Vario is not designed to improve the gait of the runner, and instead, supports the natural movement of each footfall.
Flexibility
Runners were pleased with the level of flexibility this shoe offered. Many were surprised at how freely the shoe moved considering how much protection it offers. In many cases, trail shoes that offer this level of protection can feel boxy and bulky, but this shoe is lightweight and moves with the foot. The upper uses a Sensifit technology to adapt to the natural shape and movement of the foot. The EVA midsole foam is also flexible.
Traction
The underfoot of this shoe features a lug system that is designed to keep the runners safe and secure regardless of the terrain. This underfoot is covered in multi-directional lugs. These arrow-shaped lugs do a great job of gripping the ground below the runner and providing them with a safe ride. Additionally, the outsole of this shoe is designed with Salomon’s patented Contagrip rubber. This material is very grippy and prevents the runner from slipping even on a wet or muddy terrain.
Bottom Line
The Salmon Speedcross Vario is a versatile shoe that is designed to protect the runner on their long road or trail runs. It features a ten-millimeter drop and great underfoot protection to keep the runner safe and secure on their most difficult runs. The Contagrip outsole and multi-directional lug system is durable and makes this a perfect choice for the runner who likes to switch from trail to road running frequently. The color options, while bright and rugged, only offer two different color options which left runners wanting. The price of this is surprisingly affordable, and since runners won’t have to purchase a separate sneaker for road and trail racing, this shoe provides an unbeatable value to runners. Overall, this is a shoe for the neutral runner who is looking for more of a cushioned, protective fit and feel from the outsole and an upper that is breathable and moves naturally with the movement of the foot.
