Key Features
• Uses Under Armour’s Speedform to mold to the foot for a better fit• Additional support added from an external TPU heel counter• SpeedForm sock liner to help with moisture and add comfort and support• Allows for more natural arch movement• Uses flex grooves and a rubber patterned outsole for superior traction on multiple surfaces
Upper
As the name suggests, the Under Armour used the SpeedForm technology in the construction of the upper of these shoes. This simply means they use a stabilizing heel cup along with snugger textiles to make the shoes more flexible and precise. The upper is made with lightweight woven materials with additional synthetic materials fused in for added strength and durability in the high-stress areas.
Midsole
The midsole of the Under Armour SpeedForm Amp 2.0 is made with a very thin layer of EVA foam sandwiched between the outsole and upper of the shoe. The EVA foam provides the shoe with some cushioning while still protecting the foot from anything sharp and hard their feet may come into contact with. The thin layer of foam in the midsole of these shoes is perfect for quick and powerful movements. In addition to the EVA, the midsole is low and firm which is ideal to keep your ankles from rolling while running or to keep you from tripping while working out. The midsole has additional EVA foam in the middle of the sole that never even touches the ground, it is there to give the shoe more stabilization and additional flexibility while still supporting your arch.
Outsole
The outsole of the Under Armour SpeedForm AMP 2.0 is made out of rubber and is made to withstand a strong grip on a wide variety of surfaces. The outsole of the shoe is lined with flex grooves for added flexibility and traction for the wearer. The bottom is lined with a unique pattern of little bumps, or “spikes”, to help with additional traction and durability.
Breathability
Even though the uppers of these shoes are made from woven materials, there is still some problem with the ventilation and breathability of these shoes. The Under Armour SpeedForm AMP 2.0 is breathable, but it could be better. The large, unconventional burrito shaped tongue of the shoe, as well as additional straps on the forefront area of the shoe, prevent some of the ventilation to your feet while out on the run. The shoes may not be the best when it comes to breathability, but they do offer a moisture-wicking sock liner which will help keep your feet cool inside the shoe to help make up for the limited ventilation.
Comfort
If you are looking for a good comfortable shoe to do a lot of long distance running in, then these shoes may not be the best option for you. There is little cushioning in the Under Armour SpeedForm AMP 2.0 and that works out perfect if you want something that is good for cross training. There is a thin layer of EVA in the midsole, so there is some cushioning, just not a lot. It is important to note that there is EVA foam in the midfoot area of the midsole, but it never touches the ground so it will do nothing to give you additional comfort, it is more there to help with stability, flexibility, and support. Unfortunately, these shoes are not comfortable right from the box, and you do need to take a couple runs in them to break them in. The good news, though, is that once they are broken in, they fit like a sock and many customers have said that they are comfortable at that point.
Style
The SpeedForm Amp 2.0 is an all around good looking shoe. Customers have commented that not only are these shoes wonderful in the gym, but they are also stylish while outside of the gym as a casual shoe. They do not have to be strictly worn for workouts. These shoes come in a wide variety of colors for you to choose from. Customers have commented that these shoes are great due to the fact that they not only perform well in the gym, but they also look good for your everyday activities.
Durability
The Under Armour SpeedForm AMP 2.0’s seem to hold up really well under stress, as they are quite durable. The outsole of the shoe features “spikes” for added traction, and they will wear down after a little time, but the shoes keep most of their pattern on the bottom to keep the outsoles in good shape. The cushioning, though light, does not seem to wear down very quickly either and the shoes prove to stay comfortable during your workouts. These shoes were made to last and they do.
Protection
It is important for any shoe to provide you with adequate protection to keep yourself safe from injury as well as protect the shoe itself from prematurely falling apart. The Under Armour SpeedForm Amp 2.0 has both of those covered. There are a lot of features of these shoes that are made to help protect the runner, from the reflective features on the upper which keep you safe if you are running into the evening, to the traction on the outsole that prevents you from slipping while working out. The shoe also has a lot of features that make these extremely durable and helps to prevent premature wear and tear of the shoes. They use synthetic materials fused into parts of the upper to help increase the strength of the shoe, as well as, cushioning in the midsole that can handle even the toughest of workouts without wearing down too quickly.
Responsiveness
The midsole of the Under Armour SpeedForm Amp 2.0 may be made of a thin layer of EVA foam, but that does not mean that there is no rebound in the shoe. These shoes may not be as responsive as other shoes that are made for running, but they are perfect for a training shoe. There is some rebound to help the wearer with that little bounce back they need when doing quick, explosive workouts. They are not ideal for longer runs that are meant for speed, but they are fantastic for your daily training sessions.
Support
The Under Armour SpeedForm AMP 2.0 has a wide base and has a solid cushioning that gives these shoes great support and will help prevent you from wobbling while you are doing heavy lifts. The way the midsole is made, it sticks out past the upper so that when you are lifting the shoes will keep you from teetering, and that is not something any weightlifter would want to happen while lifting heavy.
Terrain
The Under Armour SpeedForm AMP 2.0 shoes can transition well to a wide array of surfaces. These shoes are perfect for those who regularly transition from running to one of many other cross-training activities. These shoes hold their own, whether on a court shooting hoops, running on a track, or under a squat rack. No worries of slipping and losing your grip if you stick to these conditions. It is not recommended, however, to use these shoes while running in areas with deep grass, especially if it is wet, as the grip on these shoes may not hold up the best in those conditions.
Price
The Under Armour SpeedForm AMP 2.0 are a little pricey for a training shoe, the manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP) comes in at $119.99. Even though this is the most commonly seen price, it does not mean that you will not be able to find it cheaper across the internet. It is definitely a good training shoe and customers have commented that they are worth the money they paid for them.
Drop
The drop of a shoe is basically how fat or thick the shoe’s heel is. It is just the measurement of how much taller the heel is than the forefront of the foot in the shoes. The drop of the Under Armour SpeedForm AMP 2.0 comes in at only 2 mm. You are going to want a shoe with a low drop if you are looking for a training shoe. The flatter the training shoe the more flexible it will be and it will allow for a wider range of movement. These shoes are not quite a zero-drop shoe so if you are looking for a completely flat training shoe, these will not work for you.
Stability
The stability, according to many reviews and customer comments, is the best feature of these shoes. There are many features that Under Armour has added to their SpeedForm AMP 2.0’s to help make these shoes as stable as possible for even the toughest of workouts. Stability is especially important for shoes that are going to be used for cross-training because you are switching between various activities and you are going to need a shoe that is going to keep up with you. These definitely deliver. The window that is located under the midfoot allows the arch of your foot to move more freely which helps with anyone who might have problems with overpronation, supination (under pronation), or high arches.
Flexibility
The outsole of the Under Armour SpeedForm Amp 2.0 features strategically placed flex grooves along the bottom to give the shoe some much needed and appreciated flexibility for the wearer. Nobody wants a shoe that is going to prohibit their movement while trying to work out. These shoes allow for more natural movement of the foot while still being able to protect your feet and ankles. The shoes also feature a cutout in the midfoot area to allow for added flexibility.
Traction
These shoes feature a traction pattern on the bottom that is great for the front to back movements but not so much for the side to side movements. The Under Armour SpeedForm AMP 2.0 is a good shoe for cross training. The shoes will hold a good grip in the weight room and when moving outside to run on grass they are able to dig in a little bit, however, they do not do much to prevent slipping for quick lateral movements or when running through deep grass, especially if it is wet at all.
Bottom Line
The Under Armour SpeedForm Amp 2.0 shoes are an all-around good shoe for anyone who does a lot of cross training. They transition fairly well from one activity to another without causing an issue the wearer. You can wear these shoes to the gym or as an out and about, casual shoe. They are stylish and sleek and many customers love the color choices offered to them. If you are one of the many gym goers who cross trains and is frequently moving from lifting to running, to squats, and so on, then these are the perfect training shoes for you.
