Upper

The upper is a combination of mesh and overlay material, which provides breathable protection. It is highly durable and locks the foot down to the midsole base of the shoe. The lacing system is also extremely effective at distributing pressure throughout the foot so that there are no hotspots. The upper is stitched instead of the commonly used welded upper, which further prevents wear and tear and enhances the durability of the shoe. Runners have raved about how this shoe can stand up to tough conditions and how incredibly breathable, it is. Adidas has done an excellent job of designing this tough, comfortable upper.

Midsole

At 22mm stack height this shoe does a great job of cushioning every stride and providing excellent support. The combination of EVA and Adiprene materials give the shoe a springy, responsive feeling while being durable enough to last several hundred miles without any noticeable wear. The removable cushioned insole adds, even more, cushioning and supports the arch but also makes the shoe customizable if needed. The midsole cushion is ideal for anyone with a neutral stride and works great as a transition shoe if you are looking to dial back on stability. The midsole cushion also makes this shoe great for ultra runners or runners who are new to the trails.

Outsole

The grip and durability of the outsole unit of the Adidas Supernova Riot 6 is very impressive. Combining 2 types of rubber, a soft rubber, and a Continental rubber, this shoe will give you impressive grip on both dry and wet surfaces. The outsole was designed for trail and will provide long-lasting traction. The thick rubber outsole provides protection and comfort while running on uneven terrain. The cleat like outsole provides traction especially on muddy surfaces and on hills, both up and down. The cleats are evenly spaced on the outsole with moderate spacing in between, which allows you to really dig in on tough to tread places. The outsole doesn’t show much wear after several miles. However, because of this aggressive outsole, it is not suited as a road to trail shoe.

Breathability

This is a great shoe for those summer months, as it is highly breathable. The mesh upper works well to allow air flow around the foot while still also protecting you from any trail debris. Even though this is not the Gore-tex version, it is a good option if the trail is a little wet, because of the lightweight breathable upper, it will dry quickly so you can finish your run in comfort.

Comfort

The Adidas Supernova Riot 6 has lots of cushioning, the EVA material combined with the Adiprene technology make for durable comfort. The 22mm stack height makes for a plush stride no matter how you land. It also does well to protect you from uneven trail surfaces and provides a consistent ride from touch down to lift off. This shoe also features a heel cup that works well to keep the foot and the heel in place. The well designed upper keeps the foot locked in place and the cushion closes on every stride. A nice wide forefoot is also ideal for runners with wider feet or looking for a shoe that allows them to play their toes.

Style

The shoe comes in a couple different color variations, some brighter and some more neutral variations. Either is designed with the classic Adidas logo on either side. The shoe has a sleek design and although there is substantial cushioning under foot the shoe doesn’t look bulky in the least. In my opinion, this is a nice, sleek looking shoe, and the perfect accent for any trail running outfit.

Durability

Durability is not an issue when it comes to the Supernova Riot 6. Built with an array of durable technologies, this shoe is meant to last mile after mile. The Adiprene technology in the midsole is specifically designed to give you comfort and a great ride whether this shoe is right out of the box or has already endured miles of wear and tear. The Adiwear outsole protects the lugs and bottom of the shoe and is built for long-lasting protection. The durable upper stands up to any kind of trail debris and is stitched as opposed to welded to further improve long-lasting use. If you are looking for a shoe that you can get comfortable with and will last you a lot of miles, this is it.

Protection

This shoe offers a great deal of protection throughout. The durable outsole protects from anything underfoot while the upper does an excellent job of keeping trail debris out. The quality cushioning provides impact protection no matter what your stride is like. Although this shoe is not waterproof, the breathable upper mesh allows air flow and makes for a fast drying shoe. Should your feet get wet, this is an excellent feature that will prevent blisters and hotspots. This shoe provides excellent protection from any element on the trail you throw at it.

Responsiveness

The midsole is responsive, providing great feedback throughout your run. Although the stack height is considerable, coming in at 22mm and the shoe lacks a lot of ground feel, the snappy midsole material gives it some bounce and great feedback. As the shoe continues to wear in, the cushion becomes a bit softer, but the shoe retains its responsive feeling.

Support

This shoe offers great support for any stride, the overlays help to lock the foot into the heavily cushioned midsole material. The removable insole offers support for the arches and throughout the foot. This shoe is also a great fit for pronators. The structured heel part of the shoe provides additional support throughout, giving you a secure ride 100% of the time. The rugged outsole also provides support on uneven terrain, excelling at uphill and downhill sections of trail.

Terrain

This shoe is designed with a rugged trail in mind. The aggressive outsole means that it will take you on a variety of difficult terrains. The rubber outsole and the cleat style lugs work together to tackle any terrain, wet or dry. Because of the aggressive outsole tread, this shoe is not ideal for roads or packed surfaces and is best in those difficult to run places.

Price

At $110 USD a pair, this is a quality shoe that is moderately priced. Some might find this to be a little high, but for the quality and the features. it’s a fair price. If you can find this shoe on sale, even better! As with anything over the $100 USD price point, it has to be worth the price and this shoe really is.

Drop

This shoe has a drop of 10mm along with a stack height of 22mm means that this shoe is bordering on stability, but it also great for a neutral runner looking for a little more support. The additional cushioning in the heel that the 10mm drop provides also makes it ideal for any runner that tends to land on their heels.

Stability

This shoe has some great stability features. The 10mm drop provides excellent cushion and stability for any foot strike. The aggressive outsole and well-placed lugs stick to a variety of surfaces adding to the stability on any surface. The upper wraps around the foot, locking it in and giving an excellent, secure feeling. The removable insole is great, but if you require different stability features, it is also removable, so you can replace it with something custom.

Flexibility

This shoe is rather rigid, typical of any shoe with a considerable stack height. The great thing about the lack of flexibility is that it provides a consistent ride no matter what’s underfoot. The rigidity of the shoe adds to its stability and consistency on any terrain. Although some runners will find this shoe a little rigid for their taste. The cushion and lack of flexibility make it a great shoe for runners that are new to the trails.

Traction

The aggressive Traxion outsole provides traction on a variety of surfaces, wet or dry. The cleat like lugs are great for muddy surfaces and those difficult to run trails. This shoe also offers superior traction on steep uphills and downhills as well as other soft terrains. Navigating difficult technical trails is a breeze with this aggressive outsole.

Bottom Line

The Adidas Supernova Riot 6 is an excellent shoe that could find its place in any trail runner’s closet. The many features on offer make it ideal for a variety of tough terrain. The support throughout also makes it great for ultra runners looking to get in some long miles or for people who are new to the sport of trail running. It’s a little on the heavy side making it ideal for long or short training runs. At $110 USD, you are getting a shoe that will take you places and stand up to any element you have to throw at it. This shoe exceeds expectations where stability, support, and durability are concerned and it also has a nice wide toe box for runners with wider feet or enjoys having space between their toes. This great shoe deserves its place in any runner’s training shoe rotation.
