• Great stability and support thanks to the Stableframe layer
• Stylish appearance

Upper

The Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 continues to feature a mesh upper with tiny openings, but it’s been revamped quite a bit. The material in the upper is softer and does a much better job at ventilating than the previous version of the shoe. The tongue of the shoe is wider than before. In addition, the forefoot area has been widened quite a bit so that runners have a bit more room to breathe. Some runners did find that there was a little too much height in the toe box, though.;The upper also has several portions of overlays which ensure the shoe fits properly around the foot without feeling restrictive. Another small change to note is that the reflective band in the heel that appeared in the previous model has been removed.

Midsole

The Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 features the same super comfortable midsole as before. Inside this part of the shoe, there’s a generous layer of Boost Foam. This type of cushioning is featured in many Adidas shoes and has made the brand’s running shoes extremely popular for their comfortable energy-efficient cushioning. Boost cushioning is preferred by many runners.;The midsole cushioning in the Sequence 9 is featured heel to toe. There’s also a firmer EVA foam layer that’s placed near the arch area in the midfoot to provide extra support for the wearer and enhance the shoe’s stability. The midfoot also features a Stableframe component which helps to correct overpronation and gives a bit of support to the wearer’s arch.

Outsole

You’ll find the same excellent traction in the new Adidas Supernova Sequence 9. The outsole features Continental rubber, which is a material often used in car tires. This special rubber brand really helps with overall traction, even when the ground is wet. This rubber also ensures that the shoe can handle a lot of mileage. Most reviewers who tried out the Sequence 9 were quite surprised at how long the shoe lasted and how well it stood up throughout training.;The Continental outsole should have no issues going for long. It will breeze through running on pavement thanks to its tough outsole. It’s best to keep it on the roads since it’s really not built for trail running. The design of the Sequence 9’s sole has changed a bit since the previous version, mainly in terms of aesthetics. The lugs still remain fairly flat which helps to avoid pebbles and other debris getting caught inside grooves.

Breathability

The upper of the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 is outfitted with a closed mesh material. When it comes to ventilation, it does an okay job. It manages to help keep the wearer’s foot cool when running in warm summer weather. In fact, the Supernova Sequence 9’s mesh upper is a definite improvement on the previous model. Runners felt that it was much more breathable.;Reviewers still enjoyed the roomier forefoot area which helps to keep things from overheating. However, some runners found the toe box was too large and made for a sloppy feeling inside the shoe.

Comfort

Reviewers found the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 quite comfortable. In large part due to the shoe’s Boast Foam padding. The Supernova Sequence 9 is firm underfoot but still manages to offer up a soft ride thanks to the Boost foam. The shoe is tight fitting without being uncomfortably snug. The Supernova Sequence 9 fits snugly but not too tight, thanks to the upper’s overlays. The heel cuff is nice and plush and offers even more comfort for the wearer. Some runners did find the shoe fit a bit too large because of the increase in the size of the toe box. It might be necessary to go down a half size to ensure maximum comfort.

Style

Adidas seems to be improving the style of the Supernova Sequence line with every single update. It’s no longer obvious that these shoes are solely meant for working out. Being able to take a pair of runners out for more than just a job is a definite point of attraction for some. The stylish look of the Adidas shoe definitely adds value to the shoe. The shoe looks stylish enough to wear out casually.

Durability

The ninth version of the Adidas Supernova Sequence is just as durable as before. The quality outsole made of Continental rubber is found in high concentration where runners tend to hit the ground repeatedly. These shoes have a lot of miles in them, same as with the previous models. The durability paired with the shoe’s comfort make it a great buy.

Protection

There are several ways the Adidas Supernova 9 manages to protect runners. The shoe protects from impact and protects from excessive pronation. The Sequence 9 isn’t as heavy as before but that doesn’t mean it’s less protective. It remains a durable trainer and offers the same great support as before. The Boost Foam cushioning not only delivers plush comfort, it also protects runners from the impact forces that come as a result of running.;One thing to note is that the reflective band on the heel has been removed for this update. It’s not clear why Adidas decided to remove the reflective strip, but it’s a little bit of a negative since it’s always nice to have some element of reflectivity in a shoe.

Responsiveness

There’s little surprise that the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 is a responsive shoe. The Boost Foam cushioning delivers a ride that’s comfortable and energy-efficient. The Supernova Sequence 9 is not a shoe for speedwork by any means but some runners commented that the cushion felt even more responsive at higher speeds.

Support

The Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 hasn’t lost any of the great support offered in previous models. The shoe’s PROMODERATOR feature is no longer the main corrective feature of the shoe. It has been replaced by the StableFrame component. This feature, in the midfoot, contains a firmer foam which keeps the arch supported and helps to correct inward rolling. The firmer cushioning in the midfoot area makes for a great support base but does tend to add some rigidity to the shoe. Some runners felt that they had to run several times in the shoe before they felt they were broken in.

Terrain

The Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 was designed to be used on the roads. The shoe won’t do well off-road so they should be reserved for your runs on pavement. That’s fine, though, because they perform great on the road. The Continental outsole has great traction on pavement and can handle high mileage on this kind of surface without breaking down. The rubber outsole should be able to grip underfoot even when it’s raining.

Price

The Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 costs about $130. It’s an affordable price tag for a stability shoe with such comfortable cushioning. Similarly categorized shoes with the same types of features often retail for much more. Reviewers, happy with the longevity of the shoe, seemed pleased with the value of the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9.

Drop

With a 10mm heel to toe drop, the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 is pretty standard. The fact that the Boost cushioning runs the length of the shoe means it can support different types of runners, whether they heel strike or have a forefoot strike. But the fact that there’s ample cushioning also means that there’s very little ground feel for the wearer.

Stability

The same amount of stability as before is delivered with the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9. The Stableframe stability component keeps runners from turning inward too much. The shoe also has a Torsion Shank. This feature also helps to reduce excessive inward rolling. The shoe’s midfoot also features firmer cushioning which makes the shoe a little rigid and inflexible but offers great arch support and stability for the wearer.

Flexibility

The Supernova Sequence 9 provides a good deal of stability which is great news for runners who need correction for their overpronation. Unfortunately, that means the shoe does feature components that make it a bit stiff. This means that flexibility suffers.;Many runners found that the break-in period lasted longer than they would have liked. However, the responsive Boost cushioning is comfortable and responsive enough to make up for this. With poor flexibility comes a stable feeling underfoot. Overall, it’s not a terrible tradeoff

Traction

The Continental brand outsole on the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 provides excellent traction, even when the ground is wet. Having good traction is important when the weather may change at a moment’s notice.

Bottom Line

The Adidas Supernova Sequence 9 hasn’t changed too much since the previous version. A few tweaks have been introduced but for the most part, this version delivers the same moderate stability with comfortable Boost foam cushioning. The shoe still weighs in a bit heavier than some might like but with each update, the shoe seems to look and feel a lot less bulky. Many runners even commented that they found the shoe surprisingly light. When choosing the Adidas Supernova Sequence 9, you’ll get a quality shoe with prominent corrective features and super comfortable Boost Foam cushioning.;As usual, shoes in the Supernova Sequence lineup are a perfect option for high mileage runners. The shoe is also well-suited to runners looking for a dedicated daily trainer during marathon training. Its ability to run far and long is a big bonus and manages to increase the value of the shoe. The Sequence 9 will provide ample support and pronation control while the upper has better ventilation and breathability. It’s a good all-around stability shoe that would be a stylish choice for those putting in lots of miles.
