Upper

The upper of the Inov-8 Road-X-Treme 250 is built with synthetic mesh. This material provides a lightweight and breathable coverage. There are additional overlays that provide security and structural integrity. The upper also features the Met-Cradle webbing for a secure fit. The traditional lacing system provides a simple and secure fit for added protection and fit adjustment.

Midsole

The midsole of the Road-X-Treme 250 is built with injected EVA foam, providing comfort and responsiveness. The shoe also features the Inov-8 2-Arrow Shock Zone which delivers a moderate amount of cushioning. Both components combine to create an adequate amount of shock absorption while still providing a responsive and flexible platform. The shoe also features a Dynamic Fascia Band, which runs from heel to forefoot. This band encourages a more powerful toe-off with each step by creating the proper foot positioning.

Outsole

The outsole of the Inov-8 Road-X-Treme 250 utilizes the sticky fusion compound that Inov-8 is known for. It delivers a decent grip when on the road and provides a smooth ride. The sole is both durable and flexible. There are triangular pods built in for added traction and durability. The outsole also features a Meta-Flex groove, which encourages flexibility in the forefoot and creates the proper conditions for a responsive toe-off. The solid outsole design holds up well to road terrain.

Breathability

The upper mesh is designed to create a ventilation system that keeps your feet cool and comfortable. The welded overlays over the mesh do not prevent air flow. Runners’ feet will stay cool and dry in this shoe.

Comfort

Comfort is a high priority for most runners. Those that prefer a minimalist shoe will appreciate the Meta-Flex groove which creates flexibility and comfort. This shoe also provides a minimal drop while still giving you adequate cushioning. The upper delivers a breathable and comfortable setup to keep you from overheating. Due to the wider toe box in this shoe, this shoe is a good option for those with medium to wide feet.

Style

Inov-8 Road-X-Treme 250 is not only a functional shoe but a good looking one too. Available in simple color combinations that are very easy to pair with other running accessories, the Road-X-Treme 250 won’t cramp your style. Choices available include a grey, black and red option or a blue and lime option.

Durability

The Inov-8 Road-X-Treme 250 is a durable shoe that will stand up to whatever you throw at it. The outsole is made of a sticky fusion compound, and there is a reasonable expectation of durability. The welded overlays create extra security and durability for the upper.

Protection

The protection provided by the Road-X-Treme 250 is built from the ground up. The outsole provides triangular micro pods that create traction and help keep you stable on the road. The midsole is built of injected EVA foam and the 2-Arrow Shoc Zone creates enough padding to keep you comfortable without adding unnecessary weight. The upper creates both a breathable and protective shell around your feet. With a traditional lacing system providing security at the tongue, this shoe will protect you from the elements while still being lightweight and comfortable.

Responsiveness

The key to responsiveness in the Road-X-Treme 250 is the flex groove in the outsole. These grooves in the forefoot allow the foot to move naturally and provide additional flexibility above and beyond a standard shoe. The Dynamic Fascia Band stretches from the heel to the forefoot and encourages a powerful toe-off. Both features make the shoe responsive and allow for a natural range of motion.

Support

The midsole provides the most shock absorption as well as support. The 2-Arrow Shoc Zone is a unique shock absorption setup that provides a blend of responsiveness and protection, which ultimately, supports your foot with each step. The mesh upper and welded overlays provide a secure, supportive fit.

Terrain

The Road-X-Treme 250 was designed for the road. The sticky fusion compound in the outsole offers superior grip and traction control on the road. The grip is a bit lacking in off-road and wet situations. The shock absorption technology in the midsole provides good cushioning from the shock experienced on asphalt.

Price

The Inov-8 Road-X-Treme 250 is a reasonably priced shoe considering the design and features in it. The high-quality materials in the shoe provide additional value. When it comes to running shoes, Inov-8 may not have been around the longest, but they provide a shoe that will get you your money’s worth.

Drop

With only 6mm of drop from heel to toe, the Inov-8 Road-X-Treme 250 is best suited to runners that already are striking with their forefoot or are willing to make that change. The shoe does provide more shock absorption than many other minimalist options. This shoe offers a reasonable compromise between the bare minimum and the overbuilt running shoes.

Stability

The sole of the Inov-8 Road-X-Treme 250 provides the most stability. This shoe provides a layer of shock absorption that will let you move from strike to toe-off with ease. The memory foam-like midsole provides support where your foot needs it most. With its low drop, this shoe works well for forefoot strikers.

Flexibility

The Road-X-Treme 250 features design elements to create a more flexible and comfortable road shoe. Like the Road-X-Treme 220, the flex groove system in the outsole allows the foot to move and flex in a natural motion. This creates a flexible base upon which the rest of the shoe is created. The 2-Arrow Shoc Zone in the midsole provides mid-level shock protection while still being responsive. The upper flexes with the foot since it is made of a mesh.

Traction

The Road-X-Treme 250 was built to provide a high level of traction on the road. The small lugs and fusion compound in the outsole provide excellent grip on the terrain it was intended for. However, some runners feel that the shoe doesn’t do well on wet surfaces or trails.

Bottom Line

Though the company is known predominately for their off-road products, the Inov-8 Road-X-Treme 250 is a high-quality road shoe. The shoe is a bit wider in the forefoot than average, which allows for better toe splay and a better fit for runners with a wider foot. The mesh upper allows the shoe to be breathable while keeping your foot protected.;The 250’s midsole provides adequate cushioning for short to mid-length road runs as well as enough responsiveness to adapt to the changing ground under your feet. The one shortcoming of the shoe is it fails to hold up as well in wet conditions. However, the triangle micro pods provide solid traction on the road while the Meta-Flex groove provides flexibility for natural movement.
