Upper
The biggest advantage of this upper is that it is waterproof. The shoe itself was built for tackling rugged terrains and the waterproofing upper is no exception. This waterproof membrane makes this shoe great for deep mud, wet terrain or even snow. The brand’s Sensifit design wraps around the feet, providing a snug, stable fit around the midfoot, while still having a little wiggle room in the toe box area.;Their quick lace setup allows an easily adjustable fit that can easily and quickly be changed. The mesh upper is resistant to debris and is also quite breathable, being made with Gore-Tex material. The synthetic overlays are sparingly placed to maintain breathability but also give the shoe a secure fit and provide extra durability. The Speedcross 4 GTX has a lining which consists of a material that effectively wicks away a decent amount of moisture and is actually quite soft. The shoe’s Ortholite insole is equally comfortable, and also has odor resistant properties which help even more to keep them from stinking, even after those longer hotter runs.
Midsole
This shoe still features dual density material throughout the midsole which is strategically placed throughout to support the stride and promote good form. Because of the shock absorbing qualities of the Contagrip lugs, designers were able to put less cushioning in the midsole to help retain the shoe’s flexibility. Even with the minimal midsole material, it still feels highly cushioned.
Outsole
The biggest change made to the GTX was the rubber outsole. This shoe uses an updated version of Contagrip, which supposedly has better “stick” than the previous Contagrip used in the Speedcross 3.;Like the previous version, the 4 GTX features large rubber lugs throughout the outsole that provides good grip on soft terrain. However, the lugs in this version are a bit smaller but more frequent as a way to help with grip and durability. These lugs also help to absorb shock, so there can be less midsole material and thus, an overall lighter weight shoe. One of the things I like most about the outsole design of this model is the way it appears to seamlessly attach to the upper making for a secure, snug fit.
Breathability
The breathability of this version is really good, especially considering it is waterproof. The debris resistant upper does a great job of wrapping around your foot and allowing air to pass through. Although there are some overlays, which are not breathable, they are used a bit less throughout this one. Pair with thinner socks in warmer climates and thicker socks in colder climates to make this an all-weather shoe.
Comfort
The most comfortable feature here is the way it moves with your foot. The upper does a great job of locking in the foot and the cushioning is placed strategically throughout the shoe to make for a supportive and comfortable ride. The Sensifit technology also provides a snug, but comfortable fit. Some runner reported that the shoe was a bit narrow and even when they went a size up, it still felt a little too tight. This type of fit might not be for everyone, so it is best to try on before purchasing.
Style
The overall style of these makes a statement – it’s ready to tackle tough terrain and really dig in. The GTX look is a good mix of function and style. The synthetic overlays that attach directly to the laces are brightly colored and add to the already bold statement. The shoe is big but it does a good job of not looking chunky. I’m really impressed with the wide array of color variations they managed to fit into this Gore-Tex version. In the past, this line featured more conservative, darker colors, but with the GTX, there are some really nice bright designs.
Durability
This shoe will stand up to anything you have to throw at it. The mix of tightly woven Anti-Debris Mesh, Gore-Tex, and synthetic overlays work together to add more durability to the already tough upper. The improved design and the way the outsole and the upper mold together almost seamlessly means there is no space for separating or tearing between the 2 main sections. Some runners had trouble with the lugs wearing down prematurely. However, if used on the terrain it was intended for, that will most likely not be an issue.
Protection
This shoe offers great protection from the elements. The tightly woven mesh is great for keeping debris out. The waterproofing properties keep your feet dry and help to prevent blisters. They also have a toe cap on this shoe to keep your toe safe. There is no rock plate which is becoming more popular in trail running shoes. Most of all, the rugged outsole design is great at keeping you upright, even in the most challenging terrains, which is obviously a great protective feature.
Responsiveness
This one is a very responsive shoe which is mostly due to the lack of cushioning in the midsole. The secure fit of the shoe allows for more natural movement, making the shoe almost feel like an extension of your body. There is good flexibility in the forefoot area which furthers the overall responsiveness of the shoe.
Support
Considering the minimal amount of cushioning in this shoe, it does feel very supportive. The EVA material is strategically placed to help improve form, helping some to prevent pronation. The Sensifit technology does a great job of wrapping around the foot and giving this shoe a nice supportive feeling.
Terrain
This trail running shoe and works very well soft, wet terrain. The aggressive outsole and secure fit work to keep you on your feet in the most technical terrain. The Gore-Tex upper also makes this an excellent choice for tackling winter trails.
Price
The GTX is priced a little higher than the regular version and can run as high as $190 USD. However, you can find them at lower prices online. If you are looking for a high performing, long-lasting, durable shoe, this is definitely a good option.
Drop
This shoe has a 10mm offset from toe to heel. It has a standard drop. The drop does give runners some stability as well as cushioning, to get runners on their toes for a more powerful toe off.
Stability
This shoe has some nice features with regards to overall stability. The shoe’s fit provides good stability, with its wrap-around, secure fit. The cushion is strategically placed to help promote good form and provide stability throughout the stride. This shoe is a great pick for someone who is new to the trails or someone tackling a technical terrain ultra and needs that extra stability.
Flexibility
There is some great flexibility throughout this shoe, even noticeable in the midfoot and forefoot areas. This is because of the minimal midfoot cushioning and the lug placements on the outsole. This shoe is a great balance between flexibility, comfort, and support.
Traction
This is also a great choice for confident traction on tough to tackle terrains. It really digs into any surface. It also works especially well on tough uphill and downhill sections of trail. The additional smaller lugs, as well as their updated placement along the outsole supposedly offer 30% more traction than previous versions of the shoe.
Bottom Line
Thanks to the Gore-Tex upper, this is a great shoe for tackling wet, technical terrain. If you spend a lot of time running on soft trails this shoe deserves a place in your closet. The design makes for great flexibility, support, and a nimble ride. The Sensifit is great at locking in your foot and giving a secure ride, which is perfect for technical trails. Overall, this one is a solid choice, one that really stands out on tough trails.
