Upper

Unlike some of the newer models in the GT 2000 series, the GT 2000 2 doesn’t offer anything too special in terms of technology or features in the upper of the shoe. The fitting of the upper is a bit of a looser fit compared to other models in the GT 2000 series. This is mainly due to runners complaining about the shoe being too tight in the previous model. In the upper front of the shoe is a reinforced wrap, which helps the strength of the mesh in the forefront of the shoe.

Midsole

The midsole of the Asics GT 2000 2 features a few key technologies that help provide a comfortable run for the user. The first of which the Asics FluidRide technology, which basically is a high tech cushioning for the midsole made by Asics which provides the runner with a lot of cushioning, without taking away from the responsiveness of the shoe. The next technology seen in the shoe is the Gel Cushioning System, which is standard in the GT 2000 lineup. Placed strategically in the rear and forefront of the shoe, the cushioning helps with takeoff and landing during the run. These are the two most important and prominent technologies in the midsole of the shoe.

Outsole

Like some of the newer versions of the shoe, Asics has incorporated their AHAR (Asics High Abrasion Rubber) into the outsole of the shoe. AHAR is a rubber that ensures a long lasting sole life, while also providing some extra cushioning into the runner’s steps. Asics also incorporated the Guidance Line System into the outsole, so that after every step taken and every time the runner hits the ground, the sole helps to keep the shoe in line and stabilized.

Breathability

As far as breathability goes, the shoe is fine. The Asics GT 2000 2 has a lot of wide openings in the mesh to help breathability, but it definitely could have been done better, as seen in the newer models of this shoe. That being said, the breathability isn’t bad by any means and shouldn’t be something to keep you from buying the shoe.

Comfort

Comfort is a category that was absolutely an improvement from the original Asics GT 2000. With many runners complaining about the shoe being too narrow in the upper, Asics decided to make this shoe run a little wider to accommodate customer requests. Additionally, the loads of cushioning found throughout the shoe aide in highly comforting the runner during their run.

Style

The GT 2000 2 doesn’t have a wide variety of color schemes to choose from, but the shoe doesn’t look bad. The shoe doesn’t look bad at all, but because it’s an older model, the style of it is a bit older as well. If you care a lot about a modern looking shoe, then you may want to look at the newer models.

Durability

The durability of the shoe isn’t too bad. Some runners have complained about the shoe not lasting as long as they expected it would, though. On the flip side, the AHAR outsole provides good durability, regardless of the surface being run on. The reinforced wrap on the upper also helps with the durability of the shoe, prevent from premature wear.

Protection

There isn’t a whole lot to say about protection. The upper of the shoe isn’t too tightly fitting, meaning there is some room for the foot to move around if you step wrong. That being said, the bottom of the foot is very well protected due to the cushioning placed in very strategic locations throughout the shoe.

Responsiveness

The responsiveness of the Asics GT 2000 2 is quite nice despite the high amounts of cushioning. This is largely due to the types of technology incorporated into the cushioning. The Gel Cushioning System in the forefront and rear of the shoe provides great cushioning, while still keeping solid responsiveness.

Support

The support found in the Asics GT 2000 2 is something a lot of runners like because of the high quality cushioning. The bottom of the foot is very supported with the different types of cushioning, along with the different technologies and features found throughout the soles. The top of the foot is supported relatively well, though the loose fitting upper does reduce the upper foot support a little bit.

Terrain

The terrain the Asics GT 2000 2 is meant to be run on is a flat, solid ground such as asphalt and road. While the shoe can obviously be run on other terrains, it is best suited towards a flat ground and solid terrain. Running it on other surfaces may lead to the outsole and other parts of the shoe deteriorating faster than others.

Price

The price of the Asics GT 2000 2 is definitely a bit high, especially considering how old the shoe is. The price comes in at around $110, but it is only available in a few sizes. Because there are newer versions of the shoe out, the price it is at now is higher than some customers are willing to pay, since they could just buy the newer versions for only about 10 dollars more.

Drop

The drop of the GT 2000 2 is smaller than the average drop of a running shoe. With a 6mm drop from heel to toe, some runners find that the drop is too small for them. Others, on the other hand, like the feel of being flatter, as it may give the shoe have a more “natural” feel.

Stability

The stability of the Asics GT 2000 2 is very good in the soles of the shoe, though lacks a little in the upper of the shoe. On the outsole of the shoe, the Guidance Line System helps to keep the shoe stable from take off to landing. On the upper of the foot, the looser fitting mesh does take a little bit away from the stability of the shoe, but not enough to complain about.

Flexibility

Because of the relatively new technologies seen throughout the shoe, the GT 2000 2 is a flexible shoe. Runners have claimed that the shoe requires a little bit of a break in period before the shoe is as flexible as it has the potential to be.

Traction

As far as traction goes, there’s nothing too special on the GT 2000 2. It’s not bad, but there aren’t any special features to make the traction anything amazing. The AHAR on the outsole of the shoe helps add a little bit of extra traction on the bottom of the shoe as well. Traction will be better when running on the recommended surface/terrain though. Besides that, there’s nothing much to be said about it.

Bottom Line

The Asics GT 2000 2 is an older version in the GT 2000 lineup, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good shoe with nice technology and features. The downfall of the GT 2000 2 is the price, because the shoe is so old and for just a few extra dollars, you could buy yourself a newer version of the shoe that comes loaded with plenty of extra features and newer technologies. Not that this is a bad shoe by any means, but if you are looking for a shoe that offers the highest quality cushioning, you may want to look at a newer model of the shoe. However, if there is a chance you find this version at a significant mark-down, then it might be worth considering.
